Summary: Definitive guide
Review: The book assumes some programming background but is written very well, especially the explaination of class and objects. The examples are a bit boaring but then you have to learn the syntax and then use it to define your logic. Nice book over all.

Summary: Typical grab your money and run book
Review: The book is confusing to read. And it misses so many important and basic topics (I found this out when I was preparing for the Sun Certified Java Programmer exam and reading other books).

It's a typical bad book written by Unix-or-mainframe-C++-programmer-turn-to-Java-author. It explains a lot of general programming but is weak on Java-specific topics. Those dull examples and failure to show us what are important and what are not in practice are the result of author's lackness in extensive REAL world Java programming experience.

Summary: Waste of Trees
Review: Boy, how disappointing, how frustrating - the author does not answer so many simple questions (How do I create a text file? How do I set System properties at startup?) There is a total lack of decent examples. Go get the Nutshell book.

Summary: COMPLETE
Review: I feel like i have been in a race for the last 9 months trying to learn Java, and go beyond and be productive. Some guy said he learned Java in 2 weeks, its not going to happen. Then again there are different levels of what people mean by, "know a language." I have so many java books in my room people who come by think java is some sort of porn. First off most the books out there take people from a C or Java haha, background and let them learn a few new sentax moves in java. Problem is they do not tell you the full story. You will be there reading over 20 pages of stuff in these other books and not have a clue what was just going on. You will have a fuzzy look on your face, with a side note in your mind going,,yeah ill come back to that. All these java books are the same, they give you the basics the first 3/4 and then the last 1/4 they tell you how to make a art program,,etc with basic class files etc. This book is complete, you will understand what is going on, its worth it being a bit longer. In fact the 1/2 this book is on basics and 1/2 is on the extra stuff. And remember the only way to really know "JAVA" is to program. Just don't read the 1000 pages, you will get no where, because you will forget it fast. From day one you should think of something app you would like to create, and your desire to learn what is going on will be much better. The only thing i question is Ivor Horton, the guy has to take drugs to write a 1000+ page book like this. There has to be a better way of making money.

Summary: Beginning Java2
Review: It's a good book but it would be easier if you have a good programming back ground. The examples are excellent i.e small and simple hence making it easier to pick up the concepts Ivor is trying to explain. I also like how he uses diagrams to explain loops, buffers, Exceptions, etc. On the whole it is a good book but you would need some experience in programming to go faster. A beginner in programming will have some difficulty initially, but if you are really determine you will sail through.

Summary: Beginning Java
Review: This is a good book. Mostly it has good examples, but it assumes you have JFC/Swing installed. For beginner this in not easy to do, and it becomes frustrating when following the examples.

Summary: NOT FOR BEGINNERS - NOT FOR ANYONE
Review: Long, boring and poorly written. A great choise for a gift to someone you want to punish...

Summary: Just Plain Bad
Review: The author, I am truly sad to say, has done anyone who bought this book a disservice. There is an extraordinarily low amount of useful information in this book, so much so that after owning it for 2 weeks I'd give it away. I would suggest to anyone considering this book to consider another.

Summary: Who are these people giving good comments about this book?
Review: Yo, I don't know who is keep writing these good comments about this book, but I don't think it is worth to buy this book if you are a beginner in Java. Study Java through Web tutorial such as Sun Microsoft has. Then if you need more basic stuff, then buy a book such as this. This book won't help for beginner. You just won't understand and you'll get really bored!

Summary: Not really for beginners, but a great book
Review: I bought this book to learn a new language. And it didn't disappoint me. However, if I had no familiarty with programming (I have a degree in Computer Science), I would have been lost. So, if you're truly a beginning programmer, this book is a bit too sophisticated. But if you have any experience programming, this text book (and that's what it is) will lead you step-by-step through the learning process. Maybe it's a little wordy, but that's due to the fact that the writer is trying to address the novice as well as intermediate-to-advanced programmers. He probably should have assumed some familiarty with coding and forged ahead from there. Nonetheless, if you already know how to program a 3rd generation language, buy this book to learn Java.
