Rating: Summary: Excellent - concise and disciplined Review: This is probably the pick of the bunch when it comes to UML-based Object Design. Far more than just another 'how to draw the pictures' UML clone book, the author also provides sound guidelines on patterns usage and the - all too rarely covered - subject of evaluating OO design quality. The slippery topic of finding classes and allocating responsibilities is given rigorous yet readable treatment (the author's GRASP patterns). The way cohesion and coupling are updated and highlighted is worth the purchase price alone. With the UML field becoming crowded with indifferent titles, this one is a definite 'buy'!

Rating: Summary: If you read 1 book on UML make it this one Review: When considering which UML book to buy it should be obvious that some complement each other depending on the skill level (novice, experienced) and background of the reader (student, software/embedded engineer, manager). However, having read more than 10 books on UML, I suggest that if you must only buy one book make it this one. There is no other book that real-time extensions, process for UML, design patterns, discussion on UML tools and a complete case study with implementation in Java. In addition, the accompanying CD amongst other things includes a demo version of Rational Rose 4.0. My only wish is that a second/updated version of the book comes out (covering UML 1.3, providing Rose 98i and correcting some of the inevitable mistakes that one finds in detailed books). END
