Rating: Summary: Thanks Ben!!!!! Review: This book is amazing! I am a 19-year old college student with less than two months coding experience. I just completed a free-lance project that involved the creation of a simple, but very complete, web application. Come tomorrow, I may owe Ben a big thank you for landing me a large SALARIED position at 19.
Rating: Summary: The best book ever. Ben has done it again!! Review: Once again Ben Forta has saved my life and my job. I do not know what I would do without this book. He continues to be the authority on Cold Fusion. Everytime I pickup the book to look for a solution I find other ways to make my scripts run faster and cleaner. I find something new everytime I read it. I have placed an order for the second book (Advanced Cold Fusion 4 Application Development). These two books are all I need to create the best applications on the Web.
Rating: Summary: Not much different then the Last edition! Review: Although Ben has written an excellent reference guide to Cold Fusion, his latest edition is about 95% the same as the previous edition. I was expecting more information on Structures and <CFSCRIPT> tags but $50 for the same info I can read in the software manuals is a little much. I hope his other book "Application Development" contains more information
Rating: Summary: Ben Forta Does it Again! Review: Ben Forta has done it again with the aid of Steve Drucker and some other Cold Fusion gurus of today. This book has everything Cold Fusion developers need to know, and for those who are beginning to get into the Cold Fusion it has everything you need to create enterprise web/internet based applications.I found this book very comprehensive and easy to follow. Ben thanks and keep the Cold Fusion circuits hot!
Rating: Summary: A must read for Webmasters and Application Developers Review: Ben Forta is the guru of Cold Fusion, and with much reason. His book appeals to the novice and professional with clear and concise instructions on how to get a web site up and running in its most dynamic form. The author provides an overview of the software, including the basics on SQL database language, enough to get the user off the ground in developing interactive database driven web sites. When I ran into a few problems, Mr. Forta even responded to my queries directly through the Cold Fusion Support forum. Whether through his book, accompanying CD or other means, you can be rest assured that Ben Forta knows his stuff, and goes the extra mile to prove it. This book will become a fixture on your shelf, and an excellent resource for some time to come.
Rating: Summary: The best Cold Fusion book gets even better Review: Cold Fusion has enjoyed a success as one of the most used application servers in the market, enabling many companies to develop web-based database applications in the web (Intranet, Internet, E-commerce). This book has been the standard book on Cold Fusion and it has now been updated to cover the many new enhancements in Cold Fusion version 4 which makes this application server a deserving leading one. Ben Forta's writing style and clarity is outstanding. It is a self-contained book with information you will not find elsewhere. I have been fortunate to have had this book in my hands in my first Cold Fusion project, still in version 2. This book is so clear and comprehensive yet fun to read that I could learn Cold Fusion and apply it to my project immediately. Now with an extensive experience in Cold Fusion, this new edition is still very welcome. I was again fortunate to have access to a pre-print of this book and see how it developed along with Cold Fusion so well. Even experienced Cold Fusion specialists will benefit from this book. Ben has made it again. It is surprising how easy it is to browse through and grasp deep concepts so easily. Do not miss this book. Even if you are not particularly interested in Cold Fusion, this book will teach you so much about the evolving revolution in the web as it matures (e-commerce, internet architectures, database integration, load balance) that you can not afford to miss it. You will learn here in hours what would take you days with other books. I am an experienced web consultant with my own company Kreatis, yet I always come back to this book if not for the pure pleasure of enjoying its clarity and depth. With this new edition of the book, I will certaiin have more to learn and enjoy. This book is part of my success. And it can be part of yours too. You will not only learn but will learn well and have fun in doing it. But be advised: many other books will seem obscure and confusing after you read this one, because it does define a new standard of excellence.
Rating: Summary: The definitive ColdFusion guide and tutorial Review: The first two editions of this book have become the standard tutorials and definitive references for ColdFusion application development! (Be sure to take a look at the great online reviews those two editions received here on Amazon.com). This new version has been greatly enhanced and updated to cover ColdFusion 4 and ColdFusion Studio 4. Much of the book has been rewritten from scratch, all chapters have been updated, and many new chapters have been added to cover new technologies and advanced topics. Here's a partial list of what you'll find in this new edition ... * Understanding data driven web pages, and how to build web based applications * Web interface ideas, including multi-part forms, data drill-down, and frames * Using ColdFusion Studio * Performing database lookups, insert update and delete operations, calling stored procedures, and constructing dynamic SQL statements * Client-side form field validation using dynamically generated JavaScript, and enhancing HTML forms with drop-in Java form controls * Project management, session state management, and remote development * Creating online e-commerce applications * Performing real-time credit card authorization and authentication * Executing scheduled events * Integrating with SMTP (to send E-Mail) and POP (to retrieve E-Mail) * Configuration and administration tips and tricks * Tips on debugging and troubleshooting, and using the remote debugger * A complete tag reference, alphabetical listings of all tags, with detailed explanations and usage examples * A complete function reference, organized by category, complete with explanations, examples, and cross references ... and much much more!
Also included is an introduction to ODBC, SQL, and relational database design.
The accompanying CD contains evaluation versions of ColdFusion 4 Enterprise Edition and ColdFusion Studio 4, and all the code listings from the book. As a special bonus, the CD also contains over 30 third-party add-on tags and utilities that you may use within your ColdFusion applications.
I hope you find this new edition to be a valuable ColdFusion resource. And if you are an experienced ColdFusion developer, be sure to check out my other ColdFusion book, "Advanced ColdFusion 4 Development", ISBN 0789718103.
On behalf of myself, the contributing authors, and the publisher, good luck with ColdFusion, and happy coding!
Rating: Summary: A Good Book, but... Review: First of all, this book is about Cold Fusion 4.0 and the current version of Cold Fusion is 5. So, an update would be nice since there are significant differences between 4.0 and 4.5.1 and between 4.5.1 and 5. This is a great book for beginners needing to find basic information and nothing too in depth. I found some topics to be simply glossed-over and some left out completely. For example, Allaire/Macromedia apparently recommend using CFLOCK to lock application and server variables, but this really is never mentioned in either this book (recommended by Macromedia) or the Cold Fusion documentation. Why? Discussion of Client Variables was skimpy, and the book is filled with errors. I would like to see the tag guide in the back organized alphabetically instead of by type of tag, so that I don't have to go to the index to find a tag's page number first. In general, I have used this book as a handy reference to find basic information and to supplement the documentation that comes with Cold Fusion, but I have gone to Allaire's forum website for more in depth advice and support.
Rating: Summary: Another Great Ben Forta CF Reference Review: Once again, Ben Forta and company have created a great reference for CF programmers everywhere. I've always counted on his CF books in the past to get me out of a bind, and this one is no different! The code examples in the book and on the CD are very helpful, to anyone who is trying to master CF. The complete appendices on all CF functions and statements are a god send, for those moments when you can't remember the proper syntax. And last, but not least, if you are like me, and you understand CF better than database design, the sections of MS Access and SQL will be a great help!
