Rating: Summary: great introduction to web design Review: I knew a little HTML before purchasing this book, but I wanted a better handle on it, and this book gave me that. The book includes information on getting webspace, basic construction, design tips, and extras. It also provides a good overview of cascading style sheets, tutorials on web design programs such as Netscape Composer, a glossary, and a CD-ROM containing HTML examples and other resources. What I value most about the CD-ROM is the included software. There are some excellent programs for both Windows and Macintosh.
Given CSS's rising popularity, I wish that the book had a list of the basic definitions, but McFedries only provides a few CSS examples in the one chapter on style sheets. You'll have to pick out the exact terms from his examples, from the HTML sources of webpages, or from other web resources (there are some excellent ones; do a Google search).
Generally, though, I've kept this book at my desk, for easy access while I'm working on my webpages, and I regularly use the programs included on the CD-ROM.
Rating: Summary: Excellent for non-idiots too ! Review: I knew nothing about HTML when I bought this book. Three weeks later, I am happily designing a website, using cascading style sheets, etc... I actually bought 3 books and I used them all, but I found this one to be the most useful. It won't be the only information you'll ever need. I ended up buying Dreamweaver and depending on the help there a lot. But this book gave me a solid start. Pedagogically, it is far superior to Dreamveaver Help and to the other 2 books I have. It is systematic. It is very complete. It has a good index. And it comes with a CD containing a wealth of useful info, like well-presented details about tags and style sheets, and a nice table of websafe colors. The CD also contains many good programs to copy or evaluate. The only thing I disliked about McFedries is that he takes this "idiot" label too seriously and every now and then (much too often!) he thinks he has to justify his title by acting as stupid himself as the reader is supposed to be. But apart from this minor annoyance, the book is a real pleasure.

Rating: Summary: It's Great for a Complete Idiot Review: I knew NOTHING of HTML before purchasing this book. I now have 3 business pages on the web! I was a complete idiot about the subject, and now the book (my html bible) is always nearby. Thanks Paul!
Rating: Summary: Concise, well written, entertaining, full of resources Review: I liked the book from square one. It reads smoothly and examples fit the explanations. Very little is left to chance. Mc Fedries even allows you a peek at Java and Javascript. If you wish to turn your own computer into a Webserver, you can with the information provided. A comprehensive index and appendix top off the treatment. Mc Fedries does have his own website and has answered questions which I have posed to him in the one instance where I had a problem which was not even related to HTML. I wrote my webpage using solely the information contained in his book in less than a week. I did NOT have to buy software for writing webpages, nor did I have to resort to using MS Word (I don't even have it on my PC). This is the best $24 I have spent in a long time. I still refer to it on occasion and have not felt the need to supplement it yet.
Rating: Summary: The only reference you need to create a web page Review: I started reading this book with no knowledge of HTML whatsoever. After finishing, I put up a web-page with no problem. It's a must for anyone who is just getting wtarted in HTML or for anyone who needs to brush up on the finer points. I also enjoyed reading the book as humor was added to make reading easier.

Rating: Summary: The best book for HTML ever! Review: I was sitting at the library and this book caught my glanced. I had been looking to build a webpage but the other books I purchased were way to confusing with all this computer jargon. So I pick up this book and start browsing through it. I discovered that this book was really easy to read and understand and it taught me everything I ever needed to know about HTML. When I found out that this book included a cd I was ever the more thrilled. The cd has everthing you need to get started including html editors, graphics editors, tons of graphics, gif animators and other really cool stuff. It also gave examples of the html shown in the book. The author of this book also has a website which tells you even more about html. You can join his mailing list and email him. He wrote back to me and actually helped me personally with my site. Well, if you're looking to build a webpage, get this book!
Rating: Summary: Very helpfull... Review: I'm 15, and am starting my own web design company. This book helped me get to where I am today by giving me just the esentials to web page creation. I found it to be easy to understand and to apply. I keep this book close to me whenever I'm creating someone's page, just in case I need to brush up on a little something-or-other.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK THIS FANTASTIC!!!! MUST GET IT!!!! Review: I've bought those other so called HTML books and all they ever did was get me more confused than ever. Someone told me about this book and great it was, so I took a chance. He was right, this book was exactly what I needed. It is so well written and organized. You make a web page in no time flat. The examples that they gave were easy to understand and to follow. You don't even need a PhD to understand this book. If you get a chance please do buy this book and you will see that I'm correct.
