Summary: Broad coverage in compact format
Review: Another Tim Hill masterpiece. While most other related books try to cover a subject in as many pages as possible, this one manages to cover the essentials of WSH 2.0 in about 400 pages. It even includes an introduction to first-time programmers learning VBScript as their first language. Still, the structure of the book makes it very adequate for experienced programmers who just want to get into WSH.

The book is a treasure for Windows system administrators as it also got a bunch of useful administration script samples. Actually, ASP programmers using VBScript might find the book pretty useful as well, since many ASP specific books has a pretty poor VBScript coverage.

I recommend this book to people who wish to grasp WSH 2.0 using the VBScript engine. Read it and experiment with the examples together with online reference manuals for WSH and VBScript. ...

Summary: Excellent book - poor index
Review: As an MCSE and MCSD, I have been looking for an authoritative book on VBScript for NT administration and other housekeeping tasks. This book did the trick. The content is excellent and I highly recommend it. I wanted to give it 5 stars, but there are two serious "bookeeping" omissions:

1) An appendix with a full list of CSCRIPT/WSCRIPT built-in objects with their properties and methods, perhaps with brief descriptions and references to the pages in the text.

2) The index is extremely sparse. It should contain at least all of the commands, properties, etc. Also, qualitative "how to" entries would be helpful like "rename file, 237". Files can be renamed by setting the name property. There is no rename method.

I had no problem accessing the sample files at macmillantech. The site seems to be working now.

Summary: Deceptive Title
Review: As one of the other reviewers here, Ales from Slovenia, pointed out, this book is not for experienced VBscript developers! Because most of the content is not about WSH, but about VBscript. If you are an experienced developer looking for an in depth and detailed discussion of WSH, you are going to be very disappointed with this book. It's WSH coverage doesn't even surpass MSDN's. This books assumes little to no scripting experience, and as a result, the bulk of the book is an effort in teaching scripting, not WSH as the title suggests. It's also a bad reference, not that it matters, since it doesn't cover what I wanted. I'll return my copy.

Summary: Excellent instruction book - poor reference guide
Review: At the time of writing this review Tim Hill's book about WSH scripting technology is probably the best one on the market. If you're serious about replacing or (re)writing from scratch all those awkward batch files with more powerful WSH scripts then this is the book to start with. Usually programmers guides tend to be dry - certainly not the case with this one. Topics are presented with short samples and just enough explanation to understand the concept. No waste of paper! I like Notes and Program Guide sections throughout the book that provide additional explanation of some terms that I was not familiar with (If you're experienced VB/VBSCript developer then this book is probably not for you ;-). You should be aware however that this book is not organized as an reference guide for VBScript - if you're not satisfied with on-line documentation that came with WSH then look around for reference book on VBScript(or whatever script engine you prefer) with better index and page layout.

Summary: Good overall coverage
Review: Good book.

But be warned: the code samples, supposedly available online (the book does not come with a disk or CD), are not available on the web site given. My emails to the publisher and webmaster inquiring as to the whereabouts of the code samples have gone unanswered.

Summary: good book for those wanting to learn WSH quickly
Review: I am a system administrator who used this book to get started with VB Script. It is what it says and what you'd might expect -- a very good book on the Windows Scripting Host under Windows 2000. If you're looking for something else, or if you're already a VB script expert, this may not be the book for you.

The only significant downside I found to this book is that I could not find any trace of downloadable code where it told you to look on the publisher's web site. This means that if you want to use some of his longer code samples, you have to retype them. (ugh)

Summary: Fundamentals of MS Programming Explained
Review: I am a very experienced Microsoft developer. Mr. Hill's previous book, NT Shell Scripting, was fantastic, and became part of my recommended reading for IS folks. Using concepts from that book I was able to automate a tremendously complex web site build process (including database builds and dumps, source safe retrievals, etc).

This new book is great. In attempting to encourage others to become computer people, its difficult to provide them with a book that clearly and concisely explains the Microsoft development architecture. This book does that.

I'm very technically oriented, but this book does not offend me by being patronizing. Unlike many WROX and similar books, its not full of author fluff that contributes little to the book.

A good read and review, a great reference for the future. I highly recommend it, anyone who does anything with NT should have a copy.

It will be a competitive advantage between NT administrators.

Summary: You can download source code!
Review: I am currently reading this book and have found it to be very helpful so far. I have already read Tim's NT Shell scripting book and loved it.
The main reason for writing this review is to tell users that YOU CAN DOWNLOAD SOURCE CODE but not from the link listed in the book. You must go to new riders website and do a search on the book. Once you find the book there is a link to download the source code.

Summary: Worth It
Review: I am new to VBScript I thought that the book did a great job for someone new to the VBScript. So parts are a little long and it is hard to focus but all in all I though that it was a good book.

I also found that the downloads where every easy to get to and the link was still active [....]
