Rating: Summary: The Best Oracle Reference Book Available Review: Need I say more! Kevin knows more about Oracle than Oracle does... No lie! This book provides what you need with quick results... A must for any Oracle programmer or DBA
Rating: Summary: Not very practical Review: The book is thick, and god only knows why! I have been preparing for the Oracle Certification exam. Numerous times I have tried looking up parameter definitions, and they are not to be found in the index! Try licking through all the pages! For example, the book is very convoluted about steps required to set up a spanking new database, along with a pool of users. Nowhere does it delineates ALL the steps. Granted I may know that after wading through all the chapters, but try doing that with a finite project deadline... Save your money and buy a better book.

Rating: Summary: Covers new features, expanded OEM, NT, and solutions. Review: The Oracle8i edition of the DBA Handbook covers Oracle8i's features, including transportable tablespaces, RMAN, locally managed tablespaces, materialized views, and the Database Resource Manager. These new features are integrated into the existing chapters, and several of the chapters have been rewritten and expanded (for example, to include additional monitoring scripts in Chapter 6 and to further streamline the space estimation methods in Chapter 5). Many of the chapters also include new "Solutions" sections that describe the most common solutions to the design and implementation challenges facing DBAs. This edition also features greatly expanded coverage of OEM and NT. The appendix includes guidelines on data flow design for 24x7 applications and a tabular comparison of the init.ora parameters in 7.3, 8.0, and 8i. For further information on the book, supplementary articles, and documentation of known issues, please see the

Very usefel chapters about database tunning these help me to perfectly tune our Oracle databases. and to enhance its performance. I refer to this book every day in my work. It is a very good investment. If you intend to buy a book in Oracle DBA buy this book now.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK BLOWS. Please don't buy. From an Oracle DBA Review: This book is HORRIBLE! Please don't waste your money like I did. If you are a beginning DBA trying to figure out how to use a command ... OR ... if you are an advanced DBA trying to remember how to do a certain command ... this book WILL NOT help you. I was trying to figure out how to analyze a table (I forgot since I spend a lot of time between SQL Server, Sybase and Oracle) and after 10 minutes of searching, I found the page... but the meat was not there. I don't write reviews but this book is so bad that I had to write one. A better book also made by Oracle is the Oracle 8i DBA Handbook (also by Loney) That one is a better desk reference and will guide you through some difficult stuff. NOTE: for junior DBA's or wanna-be lying on your resume dbas... you won't get far on the job with this book. Try the DBA handbook or the 101 series

Rating: Summary: Useful and complete Review: This book would be good both for beginners and for experienced DBAs. There are definite beginner parts, as well as tricks and scripts that more experienced DBAs should like to have. Skip the parts that don't apply to your level. Overall a good read, no errors yet.
Rating: Summary: ORACLE DBA HandBook Review: This is a very good collection of pieces of garbages. And a good collection of Errors. Even in the scripts... I will never buy his book again..
Rating: Summary: Mostly rehashes content from Oracle documentation Review: This is a very informative book containing info on the common and everyday tasks a DBA would need to perform on the job. It covers everything a DBA should know and has some tips. It's written in an easy-to-follow language and it's also "fun" to read. It's a pleasure to read plus you'll get so much info out of this. This is a very useful resource especially for someone just starting out in the field of Oracle. Any experienced DBA should already know this info, and rather should be reading manuals then books like these. But for everybody else this is excellent and certainly should be part of any DBA's library. Even if this just for review. Each page is filled with useful and good information. A very good resource! One of my favorite Oracle Press books.
