Rating: Summary: PC repair for everyone, even computer illiterates like me Review: I'm not a computer technician. Heck, I can barely operate a computer! I "grew up" (computer-wise) with Macs, which never seem to need fixing and seldom wear out, but because my husband had a typical PC person's prejudice against Macs, I started using PCs. Toshibas, IBMs, Dells -- each and every one sooner or later had problems. Tired of talking to technicians from Wales to Holland, I decided to take an online course in computer repair and this book was required reading.Voila! Help at last. Information is thorough and easy to find. Fixes work. If you HAVE to have a PC and you run into problems, this is the book to have.

Rating: Summary: PC technicians - welcome to the new millennium! Review: Is A+ the only certification for pc technicians? Before you answer yes there is another CST or Computer Service Technician and this may be a good place to start. Following the ETA, Electronics Technicians Association standards you now have another certification to help you get ahead. In this 1500 plus page fountain of information book you have the opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of being a computer technician. The book is the only one I have ever seen approved for the CST Exam. And this book gives you a wealth information to aide you passing that exam. Loaded with figures, tables, diagrams and so much more, you'll cover areas like POST, the BIOS, CD-ROMs, CMOS, troubleshooting, CPUs, adapters, monitors, storage device, memory and more. Also for the first time you have book that covers chipsets, which I found very complete. There is a listing of symptoms and what you can do to solve the problems, this book is by the best a breaking the problem and the ways to fix the failure. Included is a cd loaded with over 150 utilities for troubleshooting the pc and its components.
Rating: Summary: Could have more depth to the various categories Review: Not for the novice, yet you don't have to be a tech to absorb 75% of the material. I would have preferred more in-depth coverage of the various topics. Would still buy the book knowing what I now know about it, but, will have to find another tome to allow better understanding of the subject.
Rating: Summary: Good reference. Review: Sam's sells the same book for only $36.00
Rating: Summary: This book rules!! Review: Started looking at this book online and just got my copy yesterday. I can't believe how much info is packed into this book. Easily the best PC repair book on the market.
Rating: Summary: Lots and lots of average content Review: The book looks impressive, but as I stood at the rack and read through it -- I noticed I wasn't learning much of anything new. I then picked up Scott Mueller's even larger Upgrading & Repairing PCs title, and it was clear that Mueller's book (now in it's 10th edition) was the book for me. This is a solid book, but for my money, it isn't nearly as strong as Mueller's book.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: The chief problem with the book is the difficulty of finding a problem among the hundreds of troubleshooting symptoms that Mr. Bigelow has included throughout the text. The symptoms at a glance, pp. xxxvii - LXXVIII is weak in that it is very difficult to use it to drill down to the actual problem. For instance, I was encountering a fatal exception error during a Windows 98 installation. There are fatal exception errors all over the "Symptoms at a Glance" but good luck finding them all! I suggest listing all the fatal exception errors together. Likewise for other problems such as keyboard, DVD or numerous components. Group them logically together! Having said that, I love the book! With some effort, a technician can find almost any problem and solve it. Hope the next edition includes my suggestions and also Windows 2000 and Windows XP. I purchased the 5th edition in August 2001 for my class and was dissapointed that Windows 2000 or NT wasn't included in chapter 40.
