Rating: Summary: Funny, but confusing after Hour 9 Review: I found the book to be written in a very humourous manner, and enjoyed the tone. It made learning Java 2 fun. However, the content of the book got a bit confusing after Hour 9, when it moved into the object-orientated progamming section. The concepts were rushed, and not clearly explained. The book is good for giving a new programmer the correct skills to get started, but loses the plot from Chapter 10 onwards.
Rating: Summary: Teach yourself in 24 hours? Review: I found this book very informative. It was my first ever programing book. I didn't understand it that much on the first reading. The one big problem with htis book was that it left me grasping for more, I had no idea how to program anything after reading this. The only thing I could do was rewrite the sample programs that were in the book. I think that the second half of the book was rushed. This book seems to have been written for sombody who already had some programming knowledge with another language.
Rating: Summary: This book is a very dull, and is not worth reading. Review: I have never read such an unexciting, boaring book. I bought the book expecting to be able to learn another computer programing language but after reading the first three chapters,i dont think i will ever read this book again. Previously i have bought books on HTML 4.0, and enjoyed learning the programing language, but i dont think i will ever learn Java because of this book. Dont Buy This Book. Look else where.
Rating: Summary: Great way to start Review: I haven't read this book -- I read its predecessor Teach Yourself Java 1.1 in 24 Hours. I felt that it was a great way for me to get started with Java. It made things very easy for me!The book doesn't get terribly deep... at the end, you will want to get another book to learn more. After finishing Java 1.1 in 24 Hours, they recommended that I buy Teach Yourself Java 1.1 in 21 Days, because it goes into more depth. Unfortunately, that book is much more confusing and disorganized, and also makes a lot of assumptions about what you know. The 21 Days book seems to be written for people who are already professional programmers in other languages. The 24 Hours book is great at starting from scratch and explaining everything. Rogers Cadenhead writes in a clear style that is also light and amusing.
Rating: Summary: Not good for experienced programmers... Review: I just recently got my BSCS, and bought this book looking to get into Java. Having bought a good SAMS C book a few years back, I was expecting a decent tool to help me learn and be an alright reference for later. What I got was a book mostly devoted to teaching the reader how to program rather than teaching the Java language. Okay, I can settle for skipping past the first half of the book, since with most computer books thats the way it goes. Unfortunately, the second half wasn't much better. I.E the Swing GUI section was basically a "type this and see what happens" section. I was extremely disappointed that the book provided no exposure to standard I/O. So if you're a beginner with aspirations to become a programmer and you want to start out with Java, this book might work for you. But everyone else, I recommend finding something better to do with your time.
Rating: Summary: Typos in book cause frustration Review: I like the author's approach, and the examples are pretty easy to understand until... ...you try to write your first Java Applet. The book has a major typo, which prevents you from compiling your first Java Applet program. I found out--after much frustration--that the book example has a typo, and that you need to download the examples from the company's Web site to find out how to write it correctly. After I had done that, the first Java Applet program example compiled correctly.
Rating: Summary: Great Book For Beginners Review: I looked in to many Java 2 books before making this selection. You may ask why did I choose this book out of all the others? When making purchase I always have three determining factors, How well is this book written? Will I want read this book? (Will it keep my attention long enough to actually be worth what I paid?) And finally price. This book met all these criteria's quite well. Rogers explains topics with a pleasant sense of humor. And you actually understand what he's talking about. This book is relatively cheap... you defiantly get your bang for the buck. THIS BOOK IS PERFECT FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO KNOW WHAT Java 2 IS ALL ABOUT! I definitely recommend this book. Rating: Summary: Some information clear... some hazy Review: I picked this book up to expand on my C and C++ knowledge and learn the current (at the time) implementation of Java. Some information is presented very well, while other sections of the book just give a cursory explanation of the material and quickly move along. For example, the sections on using Swing to create a GUI was very detailed, while the section on responding to events from your GUI was not as clear. Complete-program examples are provided throughout the book, which is must better than just code snippets. The author does a good job of introducing references online where you can get help on your own. I really enjoyed the author's writing style, with just enough humor to keep things interesting. This book is fine for a "quick fix", but to really learn the language, I would recomment the Teach Yourself Java 2 in 21 Days book (4th edition), which this author co-wrote with Laura Lemay.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Really helped... Review: I picked up a couple books on JSP and realized I needed to know more about Java. I didn't know anything... until I got this book. Well written, worded for a novice, this book will teach you the skills you need to become independent in Java programming. I highly recommend it. Rogers' sense of humor will crack you up as well. It was a pleasant and informative book. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: This is a very good book for the new programmers Review: I start programming in C then C++, when I removed from C language to C++ I got a 3 hours lecture then I bought a huge book about C++ as a reference. But when I start in Java I couldn't get a lecture on it so I tried to find a small book to teach me the basics of the Java, so I bought this book. This book is good you can finish it in seven or eight days it gives you the basics that you looking for. But the problem of this book is, it's start from Zero. He takes a lot of time and paper to teach you what is the meaning of program, compiler and interpreter, then he takes more time to teach you the "meaning" of int, float, string, array, etc.... After that he takes 3 chapters about the OOP most of the contents of these chapters gives the meaning of OO, which every C++ programmer know these things. So in my opinion if you are a C++ programmer and you can find someone who can gives you a lesson on Java it is better than reading this book Finally this book gives you just the basics so if you want to be a professional in Java you need other books.
