Summary: GOOD BACKGROUND, EXAMPLES TOO SIMPLISTIC
Review: This book provides good background information on COM, DCOM and ADO, but there is little that can't be found elsewhere. Too much time is spent on covering ADO. The examples are too simplistic to be useful. This book is a good place to start, but it doesn't take you very far.

Summary: Very Good Overview of Com, DCOM and MTS
Review: This has been my favorite of all the Component Overview books on VB6. It is not the be all end all of books but gives a very good overview in very understandable terms of how VB6 fits into COM,MTS and DCOM and explains the next release COM+. This book does not go into great depth so if you already have a great grasp of COM,DCOM and MTS there are other VB6 books that will go into more detail about actually creating components. I really did enjoy the authors writing style which seemed easily understandable to me.

Summary: Very good, but not great
Review: This is a nice book that presents the main concepts of N-Tier development, and shows some interesting examples of VB programming tricks. Before reading it I didn't know that using variants is 20 times slower than using integers (if it applies) :-) I especially liked the Appendix "Project Considerations", where they guide you how to manage big software projects and the software included on CD.

It doesn't deserve 5 stars because there are some chapters that should have been treated more in-depth (the MTS and COM chapters). So for you advanced programmers out there who want to know everything VB does behind the scenes, I recommend the book written by Ted Pattison (Search for COM and Visual Basic - you'll find it).

Summary: Excellent Book on COM with VB
Review: This is the best practical book on all the new Microsoft technologies that I've read so far. We use this book at our company to train new VB developers. Experienced VB developers who have never used MTS or DCOM also found it very valuable. It really cuts to core of what a VB developer would need to learn to be both knowledgeable and productive. Well worth the money.

Summary: A practical look at how N-tier applications are built today
Review: We have invested a lot time and research to bring you just the right amount of information to help you master building Client/Server N-tier solution with VB6 and COM. The book focuses on real world examples and implementation by walking you step by step through the entire process of building an N-Tier application. We feel that if you read this book from cover to cover you will be equipped to tackle the most complex tasks of bringing a successful application to life.
