Summary: Must-have for anyone working with ATL
Review: The book is very well written and provides very clear explanations of basic and advanced ATL features. Chapter 3 through 5 dissect very thoroughly how ATL implements servers, objects, and interfaces. The last three chapters provide a very detailed explanation of windowing, controls, and control containment. In particular, I like the very systematic approach taken by the authors in explaining ATL's features. While the book's focus is clearly on how ATL works under the cover, the first chapter and the controls section provide great examples of how to use ATL. Since I am very interested in ATL, I was eagerly awaiting this book. It even surpassed my very high expectations. Great job!

Summary: Essential reading for ATL programmers
Review: Unlike some of the reviewers here, I actually have a copy of the book and am happily reading it. It fully justifies Don Box's rave review of the book, and has to be considered essential for anyone trying to program ATL.

Summary: waiting...waiting
Review: I too attended a class by Chris Sells and Brent Rector. That is nearly a month ago. If the class is any indication, I have very high expectations for this book.

But, I have to admit, last 10 days were painful, running to postbox every day to check if the book has arrived. It hasn't yet. When it does that weekend is reserved for reading this book.

Please note I am not a friend of the authors, and I doubt it very much if either chris or brent remembers me at all.

Summary: Just a opinion
Review: I have been in a day seminar where Brent Rector was the speaker, If the book is even close to the seminar that he gave it is going to be an exceptional book. P.S. Mr. Box what (and Christian) has to do with anything.

Summary: From a 'Friend of the author'
Review: I'm sorry you felt my review was inappropriate. I (and Christian) posted reviews based on the draft manuscript - which is a fairly common situation for many books. Please note that I didn't post anonymously and made no attempt to hide my identity. Perhaps I should have been more explicit about my relationship with Chris and Brent. I assumed it was common knowledge. I obviously was wrong. So, to clear things up for good: Chris Sells and I are having an illicit affair behind the backs of our wives. Brent rejected both of our advances, so I think I am in the clear there.

Sorry for any confusion, Don Box

Summary: Friends of the Author
Review: The book has not been made publicly available yet and we alread have four reviews. Two of the reviews were written eight months before it was published. I looked at the author of the reviews and it turns out one of the reviewers previously co-authored a book with one of the co-authors.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Early indication is good
Review: The authors have written three ATL 3.0 articles for MSJ (Feb - Apr 99) based on the book and the articles are very informative. Hard to find information about developing ActiveX controls is provided in an easy to understand format. If the book contains as much useful information as the articles, it will be a great book.

Review: Another ATL book schedule going haywire

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: This book rocks!
Review: Based on the review manuscript I have been looking at, this book will be the definitive reference for ATL programmers. The chapter on CComObject is worth the price alone.

Congratulations to Brent and Chris! DB

Summary: This is a six star book
Review: ATL internals is the final word on ATL. No other book is needed to master ATL.

I have a good number of books on COM and ATL but getting the low down on ATL starts and ends in this book. The coverage in unbeleiveable. It will make you think you were part of the ATL implementation team.
This book is not a short cut for learning COM programming. You should have a good understanding of how COM works and you also need to know your c++ well(emphasis on well. This book does not teach c++)
However, considering the .NET revolution, ATL may not be of much use for much longer. But if for some reason you need to learn ATL, this book is the ATL University.
