Summary: Valuable for beginners & reasonably experienced UNIX prgrmrs
Review: The author was successful in ensuring my interest on the subject with one of his striking "Just a minutes" at page #5 to the effect that he "found that trying to duplicate the functionality of a particular command or utility was a wonderful way to learn more about Unix and programming." I felt that advises like this makes this book valuable for beginners and reasonably experienced UNIX programmers alike. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised when a friend (a DBA with decades of UNIX experience) said that he had read the book! The content of the book was able to satisfy my concerns as to whether there would be an adequate level of subject detail given that the title mentioned "24 hours" -it took me a lot more than that to complete this book!

Summary: A very good book for starter
Review: The book is so well-written that it motivates me to read all the chapters. Before reading it, I don't know how to use Unix and Vi editor at all. After finishing it, I have a very good understanding about Unix at a user level, and Vi becomes my prefer text editor. I strongly recommend this book for all Unix newbies.

Summary: You only listed one of two authors
Review: This book has James C. Armstrong, Jr. as a co-author. James also wrote UNIX Secrets, Teach Yourself the UNIX C Shell, and the HTML Reference Card, and is offended that he isn't listed here

Summary: Excellent Book
Review: This book is awesome. I started a new job where I needed to use Unix and had very little usage prior. I was given this book and started reading it...within a week I was using Unix like an old pro. This book possibly helped secure my job.

Summary: No Way
Review: This book is poorly written and confusing. I found many errors. It offers little help for people that want to excell in Solaris. Without any graphics or pictures this book is a real sleeper. I'm sorry that i waisted my money.

Summary: For newbies only
Review: This book is VERY basic. This is definately not the book you want if you are already somewhat familiar with Unix. This book is geared more towards someone that has never even logged in to a Unix box.

Summary: Great book!
Review: This book really helped me get the most out of the UNIX OS. I enjoyed it very much. Althought I don't have UNIX installed on my computer, I usually work on UNIX throught a Shell Account, and this book really helped me understand what I was doing. Now I am going to try to install UNIX on my computer!

Summary: just the ticket
Review: This is a great book. As one who hasn't seen UNIX in many years, this is a great way to get back into it. Very well-written.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very well worded and layed out
Review: This is an excellent book for someone totally new to the Unix environment to build some sort of a foundation to build upon. They do a great job in explaining some key commands and when to use them without being over bearing with jargon. I highly recommend this book. Joe
