Summary: Mistakes and Typos are a down fall
Review: A good book for a beginner, but it falls way short for someone who has any operating experience at all.

I was suprised that it did not go into the actual UNIX file structure, (i.e. inodes, superblocks, etc). Anyone who has worked with DOS would get better information from a UNIX System V primer that a this book.

Last thought: Get UNIX in a Nutshell.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Every UNIX novice should get this book!
Review: As a network tech, I have extensive experience in the world of Windows, but virtually no experience using UNIX. The book is written as if you know nothing about UNIX, but are comfortable with computers. It does not explain how to install or optimize a system, nor is it intended for advanced users. What is does is give you a strong background in the basics of navigating and utilizing the operating system. It is straightforward and to the point. It is well-written without a lot of fluff or extraneous information.

I would recommend this book to anyone just stepping into the UNIX\Linux world.

Summary: This book is fair. But there are better for beginners.
Review: Brutus is an honorable man. I use Sams books. And this book does what it says. In 24 hrs you can pass a test on what is UNIX. This book is actually used in some UNIX classes. Of course you need pre UNIX classes for CDE and post UNIX class on X windows and further classes on networks, and so on, and so on. Or you can get it all at the beginner level with "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Unix" ISBN: 0789718057. Just put the number in the search box and press ok.

Summary: Somewhat confusing
Review: Contrary to the other reviews, I found this book to be not that excellent for unix newbies. Although ok at the start, it doesn't explain some unix commands properly; I sometimes get the feeling the author thinks it is so obvious that he doesn't need to explain it. The parts for scripts and shell programming leave alot to be desired, and the end chapters on networking and internet in general are bit out of place in an unix book. Overall, not a great book for newbies or experienced unix users.

Summary: Excellent for Unix newbies!
Review: Covers all basic and intermediate Unix commands, an explanation on what Unix is, where it originated from and how to find your way around using it. Also covers handy programs such as the VI editor and how to communicate with remote users on remote machines. This book covers enough to keep you busy for a couple of months, and is an excellent reference to have at hand.

Summary: Best Book for Unix users
Review: Covers everything for starters and users, ofcourse not for Administrators

Summary: Excellent Beginner's Book for Unix
Review: Dave Taylor does an excellent job of presenting Unix to the beginner. My company used this book to train about 20 of us in beginning Unix. The hands on training and do by example while you are reading through the book is invaluable for learning. Also, Dave provides his website and responds promptly to emails send to him. I was impressed that an author would respond to my email in less than 24 hours.

Summary: The most clearest concise tutorial I've come across
Review: Dave,

I'm to chapter 22 in your tutorial of UNIX and thought I'd drop a note. You're manual has been a Godsend as far as I'm concerned and I truly compliment you on your effort. I've gone so far as to purchase Unixware from SCO and Red Hat Linux to add to my home systems. I graduated from college at Northwest Missouri State University and go back once a trimester to speak to the students about what it is I do. Thus far I have advised around 300 students to purchase your tutorial and have spoken with the campus bookstore to make it available.

Regards

Ted
