Summary: Must have
Review: Hey, let's face it. This book is a LARGE, AUTHORITATIVE treatment of perl

'Programming Perl,' and 'Learning Perl' are better introductions to the language, and should be purchased first. Once you can read/write your own perl programs, 'Teach Yourself Perl 5' becomes the reference of choice. It's main strengths are the extensive coding examples. Even the smallest little perl topic is paired with a well explained example and walkthrough. It's these example/walkthroughs which cause this book to top out at 870 pages. But, if you're the type of perl programmer that would prefer to just see a working example of what you want to code rather than have to read a whole chapter about it, then this book is for you.

Summary: excellent - nearly always 'hits the spot!'
Review: When you've got a question such as 'how do I do xyz?', just flip open the book, and there's the answer - with an example! An absolutely indespensible book.

Summary: I found what I was looking for in two minutes.
Review: I spent six hours searching the Internet for information on how to use a specific command. I finally gave up! Two minutes after opening this book I found the answer. Normally that would be greate but let me tell you why it's fantastic: I know NOTHING about the subject!!! Greate resource for the beginner and advanced alike.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Good for first time programmers
Review:

If you haven't mastered C, or any other language, "Teach Yourself Perl 5 in 21 Days" is an excellent book.

Till's style gives the reader a well crafted understanding of the language, rather than a list of commands to be learned by rote. With understanding, the linguistic basis of language becomes apparent, and intuitive.

If I needed to learn PERL, and had no previous programming experience, conciseness would not be my main concern.

Summary: Pretty bad
Review: Stay away from this book unless you have a lot of time to waste. The author writes very thick. Even after reading serval hundred pages, you still won't know enough to write useful scripts. Learning Perl is much more concise

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very thorough reference for both beginner or expert
Review: This is an excellent book for a beginner or for a more advanced programmer who needs a good Perl reference. It's the only only book I use.

Summary: sucks...stay away
Review: this book is terribl

Summary: Good intro book on Perl
Review: If you want to start programming Perl in the shortest time possible, and have some programming background, you will benefit from reading Sam's Teach Yourself Perl in 24 Hours, which packs a lot of practical materials and emphasizes get-your-hands-dirty-immediately as well as uses a lot of code snippets to teach.

This "in 21 days" book, on the other hand, is better if you have more time to learn Perl. Each lesson takes 1-2 hours, if you already have some programming background, and longer if you don't. This book treats Perl more systematically and in more details than the "24 hours" book. It explains a lot of concepts, including hashes and modules, more clearly than the "24 hours" book. I recommend you do 2 or 3 lessons each day, because Perl is such a compact yet complicated language, that it's best to force yourself to learn it quickly, rather than slowly, because slow learning will make you forget things. Be sure to study the examples in the book until you understand every line of code.
