Summary: Want to learn PERL? Read this!
Review: The difference is this: The teach yourself books are written by computer/programing TEACHERS - not programmers who usually are lacking in human communication skills.

I work in a library and have the resources to check many titles - first hand. This book is PERFECT for beginners. Each day you read a new chapter and in 21 days - BANG! You know perl. I've asked in newgroups and the like and was usually refered to the great O'Reilly books (but with these I often find I needed some programming experience - even when it claimed I didn't)

GET THIS BOOK. In fact, ALL the teach yourself ___ in xx days/hours are great. By all means, get the O'Reilly books AFTER you have gone through this one.

Summary: After 1 year of use, still a daily reference.
Review: Our company purchased this book over 1 year ago. We now have 4 PERL-driven web sites up and running and the book is still in constant use. It's so worn from almost daily reference that I am ordering another copy. We also have the Larry Wall book for when we need to go into the finer points of the language, but you cannot beat this book for concrete examples of common PERL and web programming tasks. Highly recommended.

Summary: a great place to start
Review: I'm a Perl rookie and needed to get up to speed in a hurry. This book does the job. Yes, there are some errors; to my mind, they're pretty minor. This is THE place to start for the new Perl programmer.

Summary: Start me up!
Review: I give it credit for helping me pick up the basics and learn how to program in Perl when all I had before was Pascal, but it was hard to find command syntax in this book. Good for beginners...

Summary: Not longer than 21 days to get it! Really good for beginners
Review: This book is well-written for the real Perl beginners. You can get the hang of the regular experssion (called 'pattern matching' in this book) very easily. If you have any skill or experience in programming with other languages, I bet it will take much shorter than 21 days for you to write the powerful text-manipulating Perl script for your own use. I really recommend this book for the beginners. This book, however, could be cheaper without the useless CD-ROM attached.

Summary: Excellent for beginners and experts
Review: I've been studying Perl for 1 year and I felt that something is missing. When I bought this book I figured out that Regular Expressions, Debugging and many other things was not that difficult. Buy this book and in 21 days become an expert in Perl.

Summary: More money down the pipes...
Review: They should include a toilet bowl plunger instead of a CD.

Summary: simply too many mistakes, Listing 10_7 is completely wrong
Review: Just look at Listing 10_7, the author got this tree completely wrong, makes me wonder is he a real "expert". Also this book constains too many small mistakes and you just can not find a errata anywhere. I give up on this book, Programming Perl is much better

Summary: Exellent guide to learning Perl 5 fast
Review: With this book I was writing extremely useful programs within a week B U T its claim to teach you CGI is nonsense (how do they get away with this false advertising?).

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An excellent way to learn Perl and excellent Perl reference.
Review: I actually have an earlier edition of this book entitled simply "Teach Yourself Perl in 21 Days." I cannot vouch specifically for the current version, but if it is anything like the one I have, I recommend it to anyone who's trying to learn how to create their own scripts in Perl. The book I have does not go into integrating scripts with the web (which is all I use Perl for), but apparently this new version does. It's a great book for beginning programmers. In fact, this is the first language that I really learned and did so primarily from this book. It takes you step by step with many examples through just about every aspect of the language. I still use it as a reference when trying to debug scripts!
