Rating: Summary: Oracle PL/SQL 101 is "the book" for learning PL/SQL Review: Oracle PL/SQL 101 is both instructional and practical. The more I read and perform the exercises, the more confidence I am gaining to do my job and to prepare for the OCP DBA Exam 1. Also, I e-mailed Mr. Allen (his e-mail is located in the Introduction) for the scripts, and received them within 12 hours. Thank you Mr. Allen.
Rating: Summary: 101 Points to it !! Review: Amazing Book for Beginners & Intermediate Learners. It gives an In-depth knowledge of Basic SQL and PL/SQL. A really good book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent reference resource Review: I've made this book the curriculum in the "Intro to SQL" class I teach. It works well in a classroom, and the author was good enough to send me a couple of extra exercises I could use in tests. At 420 pages, the book has plenty of substance to fill the 10-week course I teach. The book is organized very logically, so when readers get to a new section, they have already learned all the background they need for that new section to make sense. And the Table of Contents is laid out clearly, so it's easy to find a specific technique. After the classes, I watch when students use this book to refresh their memory of how to do a particular task - they locate the information they need quickly. I've dropped other SQL books from my course list, because this is the only SQL reference the students need.
Rating: Summary: Excellence in Writing! Review: The writing style is concrete, he picks a path sticks to it, very direct. In the introduction you see his reason for writing the book(his wife) and it truly shows. The book takes a beginner to a person who wants to pursue certification and meets both of their needs. If you need to learn pl/sql this is it, do not waste time anywhere else. Unlike Urman's Oracle8 Pl/Sql, this book does not bog you down with information. Chapter builds upon chapter and you can't go wrong. He also uses great examples so you can put into practice the theory. There are very few books like this one in the IT realm. He treats you as a human being in his writing, not a machine. Lastly, I finished this book in a day, could not just put it down. Mr. Allen thank you for your hard work!
Rating: Summary: Unique in structure and presentation!! Review: Excellent book for newcomers to ORACLE PL/SQL. I found the author's content and structure to be most refreshing to the standard reference book variety. The author's use of natural languange, real world examples, and overall presentation of the material was clear and concise. After reading this book, I felt as if there was always a well lit path to follow, unlike other books that dead end repeatedly as if trying to find one's way out of a maze.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! A must read if you are new to the Oracle world Review: I read this book cover to cover in two days! The book is well written and easy to follow. All concepts are explained clearly and concisely. The examples and excercises are appropriate and relevant to the material covered in the book. This is a good place to start for anyone interested in learning more about Oracle.
Rating: Summary: A perfect book for a newcomer to PL/SQL Review: I enjoyed reading the PL/SQL 101 thoroughly, I have finished one complete reading of the book and now I am going through it the second time. I decided to buy this book after getting totally frustrated of asking others to help me with Oracle. I asked our dedicated Oracle DBA to show me how to create a simple table, it took me more than three months to chase her and could not get any result and one day I found out she was gone, then I bought the PL/SQL 101 and in chapter one the author explains the most basic way to get going. Remember this is a 101 book, if you already know quite a bit of SQL, then this book might bore you. The title is perfect, and its readers should of that level. I would like to thank the author for getting me hooked to Oracle and PL/SQL the easy way (Ofcourse there is no easy way, you still have to read and reread the book several times, and practice and practice).
Rating: Summary: Oracle PL/SQL 101 BY: Christopher Allen Review: JOB WELL DONE Mr. Christopher Allen!! This is the MOST helpful book to me on Oracle Pl/ SQL that I have ever seen in Silicon Valley area! I have spent many months browsing and buying books on Oracle from almost all bookstores in the bay area, but this book is the only one that helped me. I am very thankful for that. Abdullahi Koshin from Oakland, CA
Rating: Summary: Top-Notch introduction and reference Review: Thorough coverage. Easy to understand. Good examples. Deserves a place on the shelf of anyone who uses SQL once a month or every day.
Rating: Summary: "101" apparently means "Delivers 101% of what it promises" Review: In addition to being a great resource for learning SQL and PL/SQL, this book gives clear, understandable introductions to database structure, relational integrity, security, and ODBC. Even tells you how to link to an Oracle database from within Access. I was surprised at how much stuff it covers.
