Rating: Summary: Great introduction to SQL and PL/SQL Review: This excellent work starts at the beginning and methodically steps through every important feature of SQL and PL/SQL. It gives a perfect basis for learning how to write SQL statements and PL/SQL code. The last two chapters cover procedures, packages, triggers...all the core programming tools in PL/SQL. Every chapter has dozens of exercises designed to help you practice the techniques and get them into your mental tool set.Good next steps after this book might be "PL/SQL Programming" for complete programming nerds, or one of the Oracle Press exam guides for those wanting to get certified. Trying to squeeze those things into this book would have made it too big to print!
Rating: Summary: GOOD BOOK FOR BEGINNERS!!! Review: This book is good for beginneers. Even though it covers sql with very good examples, it doesnt do justice to Pl.Pl is covered only in last two chaptars. i dont think this book is worth for 35.99$.moreover this book doesnt contain any practice excersies or exams!!
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: Great book for beginners and experts. Quick reference tool
Rating: Summary: Excellent Resource Review: Coming from a non-technical background, I have often been intimidated and frustrated at the book choices available to "newbies" to this field. But out of the myriad of books I've tried, this by far the most well-written and straightforward I've encountered. Technical acuman and communication skills do not often go hand in hand, but Christopher Allen appears to have mastered both.
Rating: Summary: Solid Introduction to SQL Review: Great book for new Oracle DBAs learning how to write SQL statements and queries. I worked through the book chapter by chapter. The first two sections ("Database Basics" and "Advanced SQL") are very strong, with clear instructions and a logical progress from simple to more complex steps. However, the third section, "Creating Programs using PL/SQL", falls short. Here the material gets too complex too quickly.
Rating: Summary: Great starter book about PL/SQL Review: I just started to read Mr.Allen`s book Oracle PL/SQL 101, with no prior knowledge of either Oracle databases or SQL. I was able to understand the different concepts and commands due to Mr.Allen clear and precise writing.
Rating: Summary: Excellent PL/SQL Starter book Review: I'm just getting started with this book. I also have several other Oracle and SQL books. This looks like a good way to get my feet wet. I have worked in IT for 17 years, doing everything from teaching to OS/390 systems work to networking & cisco routers, now Oracle & PL/SQL. I like the approach this book takes. It is a good choice for experienced IT professionals new to this area. Thanks! Keith
Rating: Summary: Best book for learning PL/SQL Review: This is the best introduction I've seen to PL/SQL programming. The book takes its "101" moniker seriously - it doesn't assume anything, but explains fully everything you need to know to learn how to program in PL/SQL. Since PL/SQL relies on a fundamental knowledge of SQL, the book invests a good deal of time covering the database concepts, SQL concepts, and SQL commands necessary to write good PL/SQL code. Bravo! That's why this deserves to have "101" in its title. Those who already have some SQL knowledge would do well to read over these SQL chapters anyway - the book really pulls things together, filling in the gaps that often come with self-teaching. It also has great examples for some of the more obscure features of SQL and PL/SQL. Perhaps the author can be persuaded to do a "PL/SQL 201" book - I would buy it.
Rating: Summary: Great SQL Book...But IMHO : Wrong Title Review: I would aggree with all the positive reviews for this book on most aspects. With re to just ordinary, intro SQL..this book is great ! My feeling is that even the most technically-challenged people will feel comfortable going thru this book and become productive. But IMHO, SQL is definitely NOT PL/SQL. I can't help but think that the title is not right. I mean there are only 2 chapters pertaining to PL/SQL out of 9. So if you want to learn SQL in 7 days: Get and keep this book !(You may need to re-read it) But if you're looking to get to the the next level, this book may not be what you really NEED. It'll definitely whet your "appetite" though. To be honest, i found it hard to plunk $40 for 2 chapters worth of material that i'm interested in. So i read them in the bookstore. But i'll definitely save my lunch money for the next real PL/SQL book by Mr Allen !
Rating: Summary: Best book for pl/sql beginner Review: This book is very easy to follow and understand. It not only tells you what the basic concepts or commands are, but also teaches you how to use them. It's also a good reference book for OCP exam PL/SQL part. One suggestion: I'd like to see more questions after each chapter
