Summary: Give this kit an 8 star rating !
Review: If you are new to Networking or need a review of TCP/IP, then this kit should be your foundation for Internet communications! If you are working on your MCSE, CCNA, or anything else dealing with internetworking, then this is the kit for you. The cd that's included with this kit is great. I can't stress this enough, this kit is a must buy !

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Internetworking with TCP/IP principles, protocols & arch.
Review: If your new to TCP/IP this book can snow you a bit with its jargon and $10.00 words. The contends are VERY good and the auther gives very detailed comments. A review of something more basic first will save you some confusion: TRY THESE...

TCP/IP for Dummies - Candace Leiden/Marshall Wilensky

CCNA for Dummies - Ron Gilster/Jeff Bienvenu/Kevin Ulstad

Cisco a biginners guide - Tom Shaughnessy

After you review these,Commer's book can be darn right enetrtaining and fun to read. Check out Page #224 in Comer's on Checksum as compared to Page #93 CCNA's For Dummies, on Checksum. Examles like this are spred arcoss the book and will keep you chukling when you see what to much education will do to you. I think this book is very good and I plan on buying his other two in this series. But if your new TCP/IP bring a THESAURUS. One more: Page #223 (Commer) BECAUSE THE PROBABILITY OF LOSING A GIVEN FRAGMENT IS NONZERO. Huh.....LOL

Summary: Complete is the word!
Review: In order to be a successful network technician, network manager or network designer you have to have a complete understanding of the TCP/IP both version 4 and 6 and Douglas Comer has put together a package that maybe the best out there today short of formalized classroom training.

This package has both software and a book, Internetworking with TCP/IP Volume 1, 4th edition. The book is updated to cover both version 4 and 6 of TCP/IP and after reading the book I can see why the author is considered the foremost expert on the subject.

Comer covers topics like network technologies like WANS and LANS, FDDI, NSF and ARPANET. Then Comer goes on to cover classfull addressing, ARP, RARP, IP and the IP Protocols like ICMP, CIDR, UDP, TCP and DHCP.

Also discussed in the book are BGP, RIP, OSPF, Hello and Multicasting. Applications like Telnet, FTP, TFTP, SMTP, POP, IMAP, HTTP, VoIP and SNMP are but a few of the topics. Finally there is firewalls and security to round out the book.

The cd included is a cyber classroom that coincides with the book at all levels. The install and setup was a breeze and no major complications were encountered. There are hundreds of questions from both the cd and the book and the whole package is for every skill level.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: The Package Should be Tested for Proper Operation
Review: What this box contains: The book, "Internetworking With TCP/IP" Principles, Protocols and Architectures", 4th Edition (ISBN: 0-13-018380-6) and a CD-ROM which contains audio and animation to supplement the book materials.

In my opinion, the CD-ROM is not a necessity. The explanation offered in the book is top-class----CLEAR!! The CD-ROM is a plus but I think makes the whole thing overpriced. You can do with the book alone.

Installation is smooth but when you start the learning program from your computer,... it does NOT work. Apparently it was tested completely on the C drive hard disk and even hard-coded to a path on the C drive but the installation process does not copy the required folder on the C drive. After installation, just look at the contents of the batch file

C:\Program Files\PTG Interactive\Cyber Classrom\9055B1.BAT

and you will find that it is trying to access

C:\Program Files\PTG Interactive\Cyber Classroom\htdocs\9055b1\start.htm"

Dig further (look at the contents of start.htm) and you realize that you have to do some tweaking to make things work. This shouldn't be the case and the package is already overpriced!!

Just buy the book (ISBN: 0-13-018380-6)... In think I should just have bought the book only.
