Rating: Summary: A joy to read Review: Dan Gookin has superlative talent for writing engagingly and entertainingly. His sense of humor is off the wall and likeable. Honestly, I think this is the way that ALL technical books should be written. His attitude toward the layman is very sensitive, explainingly everything in painstaking detail. This attitude dwarfs other books which are so dry and academic, or even worse, condescending toward the layman. However, I'd hate to detract from anything from this work, but sometimes, sometimes the humor can be a bit excessive and distracting. (IE, Viking jokes?) But for the most part, the humor is just adequate. His chapter on pointers in Vol. 2 is WONDERFULLY written. He made a confusing subject immediately comprehensible and dare I say, EASY to understand. The same goes with his chapter on structures, I/O, and just about every other topic. I just wish that Mr. Gookin wrote Vol. 3 to this series because there are some advanced topics that are left uncovered.
Rating: Summary: Immensely helpful and accessible Review: Like all of the "For Dummies" books, this volume caters to the absolute layman. NO PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE OF PROGRAMMING NECESSARY. Everything is explained extremely, extremely lucidly so that a complete ignoramus can learn the language somewhat proficiently. There is only one warning I have. Dont expect to become an expert at C after reading both volumes. Go to another book, such as "C How to Program" or the Kernighan and Ritchie classic for intermediate to advanced programming.
Rating: Summary: Eureka! Review: After reading several books about the mysterious and often frustrating C language, I found myself lost. I found the light in a book with yellow and black cover named "C for Dummies, Volume One". I found myself reading the book in the store until the manager wanted to toss me out. I just had to buy that book. A desiscion I never will regret. It`s actually a very humorous book, and I often found myself reading it only because of the "one-liners" mr.Gookin so elegantly have integrated with actual learning stuff... stuff that you usually wouldn`t be so eager to read about. This is a great read! Even if you never want to learn C programing.
Rating: Summary: An excellent guide for beginners young and old. Review: Well I have a few things to say about this book. I have tried several other "tomes" of knowledge written by the "C Lords," but nothing seemed to work for me. I am going to be attending to NMSU in the fall as a Computer Scinece major and I wanted to get my feet wet so to speak. Gookin is an excellent author and he assumes nothing. Most books don't explain what #include <stdio.h> really does, or for some of us, how to type it. If you're new to C and no absolutely nothing about programming this is the best set of books you can buy.
Rating: Summary: Great Book for those with a sense of humor & w/o a BIG ego Review: If you want to learn C, start here. Dan Gookin's writing is a joy to read, and you will learn to program in C in short order. These books introduce C in a clear manner without the techno babble associated with many other books.
Rating: Summary: Well......not a serious book. Review: This book is funny, and the material is easy to grasp, but there isn't a lot of material. If you're a hobby programmer, then do buy iy, but if you're interested in programming for living, you shouldn't spend your time. I didn't. I've been learning 5 month, and I know enough C\C++ to start working.
Rating: Summary: Warning! Not for serious programmers! Review: Warning! If you take programming seriously and want to consider it as a career, do not waste your money on these books. They are total garbage! I was fooled by all the good reviews and wasted my good earned money. The books are easy and simple to read (probably why all the good reviews), but so is a comic book. That doesn't mean you are going to learn anything. I have read many books on C and programming in general, taking a course on C at a university, and I can tell you the author's coding styles is very unorthodox and doesn't make any sense. If you have money to burn, don't care to much about programming and consider it a passing hobby, then this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: Great book for beginners! Review: I am 13 years old and picked up these books with no programming experience at all. However Dan Gookin has made learning C so simple that I was suprised how quickly I started to write in C. Dan's great sense of humor and easy to understand writing style kept the books from ever getting boring. The one complaint I have is that the book didn't have that much information on graphic programming, however his detailed web site had the information I was looking for. These books rules!
Rating: Summary: Ok Get this book you will be sorry if you do not Review: I love this book i started when I was 14 and I just now turned 15 and I am done with volume 1 and I am deep in Volume 2 now. I hope You can Enjoy this book as much as I have. Dan Gookin is the best. O and you should check out his Unofficial web page too it has chapters that lead off right where you were in volume 2 Great book!
Rating: Summary: Just right for the beginner Review: This is a wonderful book for anyone who has no programming experience. It is very clear and consise along with being funny. Though there are a couple of draw backs. 1. The book doesn't come with a c compiler (you're best best is to buy either Borland C++ or Microsoft Visual C++) and 2. Some of the example programs are out of date and do not work with some compilers. On the bright side the book has it's own website (...). I had two seperate questions for the author, so I e-mailed him and he responded promtly both times! I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about programming or learning the c language.
