The Complete C# Training Course

Review: If you're looking for a way to get started in development as a complete novice, this is probably a good starting point. If you're looking to get up to speed on C# quickly, and you have experience in C/C++ or Java, then look elsewhere. The book is huge, but it belabors very basic concepts, and is achingly slow - the first chapter has a 'what is a computer' section. I don't really find the CBT bit that much more useful than an ordinary book. It's mostly just pages of HTML viewed in a browser, with a little audio. This means to type in any of the programs you're constantly switching windows between Visual Studio & the book text. Easier & cheaper just to use the book, but of course sticking it in a cardboard box with extra CDs means that Deitel can charge an extra ... for it.

Summary: Disappointed in Prof. Deitel's Overpriced Books
Review: The first Deitel book I bought was the "Complete C++ Training Course"- a so called "boxed set" version. The C++ program book and a cd-rom was inside the the large box. Back then, having a book with a cd-rom was a novelty so I guess the the box justified the price. The cd-rom was an electronic version of the book - a mulimedia cyber classroom. The book itself was very poorly published-there were alot of typographical/font errors. To be honest, I really liked the Cyber classroom cd (It was a neet, stand alone application that gave a synopsis of the book. It had search capability - much like an electronic index, as well as live code samples with voiced explanations). I actually ended up just using the Cyber classroom and I left the book on the shelf as a reference.

However since the mid 1990's, most computer books include one if not two cd-roms - AND THE CD-ROM'S ARE IN THE JACKET SLEEVES. THEY ARE NOT PACKAGED IN A HOLLOW CARDBOARD BOX!). Most of Prof. Deitel's books are an excellent teaching guide-although some of the code examples and text are boring and NOT concise. This C# Training course includes a "Cyber Classroom". However is not a stand-alone application but an HTML version of the book that uses your browser to view it - this is not to my liking. Alot of computer books have html versions on a cd-rom -so this is not something unique anymore. It certainly does not justify marking up the book an additional $50 or $60. (The original price of this book is almost $110!!!!!! Although Prof. Deitel's books have a great reputation- the included cd-rom does NOT justify the inflated price of this book. MY RECOMMENDATION IS that if you are hooked on buying a Deitel book - JUST BUY THE "C# How To Program" book-and only if you can buy it at a discounted price.
