Summary: Great followup!
Review: The book is a great followup to the prior MPLS and VPN architecture by Ivan Pepelnjak and Jim Guichard. The book goes directly to the description of various MPLS applications with some initial description of the protocol. It is best if you already have a basic understanding of the underlying protocols. It's been a great support to some of the projects I will be working on.

Summary: All you need to know about MPLS
Review: This is a pretty good book on MPLS. It starts with introducing WAN technologies and their relationship to MPLS architecture, which is very important in the sense of understanding this technology. It covers a lot on packet based MPLS using routers, ATM MPLS using ATM switches , MPLS Traffic Engineering and QoS. I like the simplified examples. The author has done a good job in simplifying MPLS. He has also take the pains to provide detailed configurations for each and every device within the case studies, rather than let the reader make assumptions.

I have read most of the books out there on MPLS, and would recommend this book to any Network Engineer who plans to work with MPLS. This book covers all you need to know about MPLS right from routers up to the big BPX ATM switches. The chapter on Traffic Engineering is particularly well written with examples and case studies using OSPF as well as IS-IS.

Summary: Splendid presentation
Review: This is a very nice book. It is well written and organized very well in a structured manner. I also noticed, that one could read the chapter on Traffic Engineering without reading the previous chapters on MPLS VPNs and still get a grasp of the topic under discuion. In this sense, the book is very modular.

I would recommend this book to anyone trying to catch up on MPLS from the scratch. The title indicates that the book is advanced in nature which could frighten the first-time MPLS implementer, but I assure you, that the initial chapters are a warm-up on WAN technology and could serve as a refresher for TDM, Frame Relay and ATM technology.

The author does a wonderful job in terms of the ramp up to advanced topics and has presented the chapter on ATM MPLS very well with screen shots from the BPX product, which I feel are very useful. Frame-mode MPLS is covered as well.

The MPLS Traffic Engineeing examples and case study was very well presented as well. However, the chapter on Optical MPLS was a theory-only chapter and did not have any case studies. As such, I would assume that the topic is either beyond the scope of this book or could be the topic of a future cisco press book.

All in all, a very nice book indeed.

Summary: A very useful guide for deploying MPLS
Review: This is an excellent book for implementing ATM MPLS networks. I noticed it covers Frame as well as Cell mode MPLS VPNs. I liked the way the author dealt with Traffic Engineering. The TE chapter had a very nice case study which I used for our network.
