Summary: Great Place to Start if You Know WIndows NT/2000
Review: If you are new to TS/Metaframe, but you have a solid handle on Windows NT/2000, this will be an easy and informative read for you. While you will already have a solid grounding in file system an regsitry security, system and group policy, user groups, performance tuning, and system configuration, Thin Client Solutions is full of detailed information on how to apply your NT/Win2K savvy in these areas to the TS environment.

Mathers covers both the TS and Citrix products in detail. You'll get coverage on everything ranging from the differences between the two products, to installation, licensing, optimization, security, and application integration. And don't forget, the appendixes are also chock full of useful stuff such as a TS/Metaframe command reference, file system security configuration scripts, registry security configuration scripts, and more.

A word of caution, however. If you don't know Windows NT/2000, you'll probably be lost -- Mathers assumes that you are on a pretty solid footing with the Windows environment. If not, you'll need to bring your Windows NT/2k skills up to speed before this book will be of benefit you.

Summary: Very good book, but lack of appsec.exe information.
Review: It's a good book for anyone starting or in the process of rolling out Terminal Servers with Citrix Metaframe. One would only wish for more information about appsec.exe and Application management.

Summary: About this book.
Review: Now that Terminal Services are an integrated component of all Windows 2000 Server products, (instead of a separate OS as was the case with Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition) more people than ever before will be looking to install, test and implement this technology.

My goal in writing this edition of "Thin Client Solutions" was not to simply produce a Windows 2000 equivalent of the first edition, but to deliver a completely updated book (now nearly twice as long as the first) that provides a singular reference with the latest information for both Windows 2000 Terminal Services and NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition administrators whether or not they are running Citrix MetaFrame (version 1.8).

One of my key considerations when writing was to provide Terminal Server administrators with the information necessary to help them avoid many of the common implementation obstacles that they are likely to encounter. Areas such as:

-Detailed information around the planning and configuration of the Terminal Server environment, including server hardware sizing, server management and client configuration.

-A demonstration not only on the basics on how to install Terminal Server, but also more advanced configuration and tuning changes that should be made to provide increased stability, availability and security for the implementation.

-Examples of how Terminal Server can be used to solve different heterogeneous implementation problems using various clients running on non-Windows operating systems. In particular Java, UNIX (including Linux) and Web-based clients are all discussed. An entire chapter has been dedicated to the implementation of Terminal Server and MetaFrame to provide Web access to applications running on Terminal Server, including Web Server and MetaFrame server requirements, the Citrix NFuse product and common issues and solutions for accessing Terminal Server through a firewall.

-A discussion on the use of user profiles, and system or group policies to enhance not only the security of the environment, but also helping to simplify the interface and ensure that users are able to work productively with the applications provided through Terminal Server.

-A look at common operational tasks that are performed once the Terminal Server implementation is complete such as server and user management, health monitoring and server and application maintenance.

-A more detailed discussion on application integration, the role and importance of application compatibility scripts along with examples of how common applications are configured to function on Terminal Server.

I have divided this book into three parts. In the first part I provide an overview of the Microsoft and Citrix thin client technologies and demonstrate some of the common features and functionality available. In the second part I look at the areas that need to be cover when planning a Terminal Server implementation, including project manager considerations, network design and configuration issues, client software and hardware options available, server hardware sizing and management planning, and finally server and user software management. In the final section of the book I get down to the nuts and bolts of performing a Terminal Server/MetaFrame implementation.

Make sure to watch the official New Riders Web site for this book, where I will be posting script examples, corrections or updates to the book, as well as additional Terminal Server and MetaFrame information.

Summary: A tweakers guide to Citrix heaven
Review: The title says it all. I am responsible for a Citrix environment covering the East Coast. All remote sites pull from a central Citrix site. I now have 100% uptime thanks to this book.

Summary: Comprehensive and Complete
Review: This book covers every aspect of Terminal Server and Metaframe in detail. It also full of solid real world implimentation advice that you can easily apply. Great!

Summary: A comprehensive book!
Review: This book is a comprehensive text and well organised offering, whether your new to Citrix or not. I particilarly liked the section on load-balancing and the comprehensive section on configuring web connectivity (especially adding Active X controls to your web pages to make the whole Citrix experience even more seamless!).

No book such as this would be complete without a detailed section on troubleshooting Metaframe - which this has. I recommend this book!

Summary: Thin Clients Understood
Review: This book is great! It supplied all the answers I needed to get Windows NT Terminal Services 4.0 installed and running great. It is full of tips for new administrators to get through to the important facts. I highly recommend this book if you are new to thin client servers.

Summary: VERY Good Book for Tips and Tricks
Review: This book is VERY good for those that know the basic structures of computer and server architecture and are implementing Citrix for the first time. The ... bucks is worth it if you want a citrix book that will give you tips and tricks on terminal servers and citrix metaframe. It's also one of those books that you can't put down just because it's filled with SOOOO much information (It's only day 2 and I'm on page 100). Word for the wise: don't buy this book just for getting certified. That's not it's purpose? The book is intended to familiarize citrix users and administrators with the envirenment.

GO GET IT NOW!
