Rating: Summary: Best Book I have seen Yet Review: "Programming in Visual Basic 6" Has to be the best beginners VB book I have seen to date. The two writers ( Julia Case Bradley and Anita C. Millspaugh) have created an easy to follow well written/planned book. This book explains the concepts of programming brilliantly and if I could have only one book about VB6 this would be it. The exercises at the end of each chapter are superb and I would strongly suggest completing the exercises thoroughly in each chapter before moving on. The book is progressive and the knowledge gained in each chapter will be required for a complete understanding of the next chapter. It should be noted this is a beginners book and is really not suitable for someone who is already a skilled programmer. For the beginner however this book will guide you thoroughly and carefully through the fundamental concepts of programming. I am new to both VB and programming. I have bought several other VB6 books , none of which come even close to this one. I give a big thumbs up for anyone looking for an introduction to the world of Programming.( btw I have found no errors in the code samples at all and I have completed up to chapter 10 thoroughly.)

Rating: Summary: It is a book for beginner who are willing to be tortured Review: I am using this book to teach my 9 year old Visual basic as his first programming language. He has previously had some nonformal experience with VB ( simple games, animations etc with VB ) I find that the Bradley book is ideal for him. It covers the mildly boring bits of VB fairly well. ( meanwhile I am teaching my 13 year old Scheme , his 3rd programming language)

Rating: Summary: Difficult to follow and confusing Review: I have been using this book for a college level vb course. Although it offers some good information, the examples were few and far between, difficult to follow, and we ran across numerous errors in the text and in some of the exercises/examples. I would recommend using the Step-By-Step books -- they seem to be more logical and comprehensive.
Rating: Summary: A good starter book for 6.0 Review: I have used their 5.0 version and this book looks very similar. The examples are good and easy to follow. Only problem was the CD provided with the book I received did not contain all of the Student Data files necessary to do some of the projects. Hopefully this will be corrected in later releases.
Rating: Summary: Good for classroom , not for independant study Review: I really dont want to step on any toes here, but I must give my honest opinion. Having taken a college course in VB6 and using this book I can understand why the college chose this book, it is perfect for the classroom environment: which entails hands being raised due to unclear material. I complenented this reading with another VB6 book so I could understand the points better. I suggest this for any VB6 beginner. My suggestion to the authors is this: Please, whenever you are showing an example of the concept just made, don't just use a snippet of code that will not run on its own, but go right into a very small program to explain the code. That way we (beginners) can actually see and understand what was taught. I must not blame the writers too much, my instructor should never have been teaching the subject in the first place. Maybe it would have been different with someone who was current with and enthused about teaching VB6. For those of you who want to learn on your own, and you CAN do it because that's practically how i'm learning, buy Peter Wrights book on Beginning VB6. For those students who are using this book, if you finish the class while finishing all the required projects, you should be fine.

Rating: Summary: Why does this book always seem to get bad reviews elsewhere? Review: I really like this book. I was forced to buy this in my very first Introduction to Visual Basic programming. My best advice for people interested in buying this book is make sure you are an absolute beginner to VB programming. Anyone with previous experience will find this book extremely dry. Even after developing Visual Basic for a year and a half, I still use this book as a reference when I'm reverting back to some of the basics of VB programming. Every possible beginning VB topic is covered, from Input Boxes to Message Boxes, If..Then..Else cases to Select cases. Enjoy.
