Rating: Summary: Finally we get a useful guide on this fundamental tool! Review: SQL-Plus is a fundamental tool but it is hard to find a useful guide on the topic in the market. And I am glad finally there is one.Oracle Sql Plus: The Definitive Guide is really interesting to read. The author writes in a friendly style and depicts each topic with lots of examples ( so many and so usful that you can add to your own libraries ). Personally, I am much appealed by the author's discussion on reporting, writing scripts and setting environment. If you are not familiar with any of these, you will be greatly awarded when finishing the book. I can bet it!
Rating: Summary: Very good book for every reader Review: This book covers from fundamental to expert level of Sql*Plus and the useful tips comes really handy. I find this book to be very helpful, eventhough I have been using Oracle SQL*Plus for some years.
Rating: Summary: The most accurate SQL*Plus reference Review: This book finally answers a need for SQL*Plus users that need something more than a quick reference card, but not an inaccurate tome, like "Oracle 8: the complete reference". For instance, when it comes to looping, on page 254 you can read "There is no way to write a real loop using SQL*Plus." If you see this, you won't search through another 100 pages of manual trying to find a meaningful example. Excellent, correct, and an excellent balance between conciseness and completeness. I have even adopted this book for my undergraduate database class.
Rating: Summary: He forgot the insert statement. Review: This book is usefull only for extracting data. There is nothing about inserting updating or deleating. How can it be called "Definitive"?
Rating: Summary: Another useless book from O'Reilly Review: This is an another useless book from O'Reilly. You might better use on-line documentation. Most of the things are already what you know, or you can get them from on-line documentation. For the beginners of sql-plus, it won't help. When you really need some info, it doesn't have it. For example, in page 57, it says, "You may, however, configure SQL*Plus to use another editor of your choice. Chapter 11 tells you how to do this". Chapter 11 is indeed "Customizing your SQLPlus Environment". However, it is simply a list of SET commands, and it does not explain anything about setting up the editor of my choice at all !!!
Rating: Summary: Great for a beginner Review: Well written, plenty of examples, very easy to read and follow. As someone who is new to SQL*Plus, I appreciated that. Once I got things installed and running, it was easy to get right into iSQL*Plus (running SQL commands through a browser interface) - really cool. The chapter on Create HTML Reports was very nice as well.
I found this book very helpful.
