Summary: Better than average treatment of Systems Analysis and Design
Review: This is a much better treatment of the basics of Systems Analysis and Design than you are likely to find in most textbooks. Our field has evolved rapidly and we are in the midst of a similar evolution in the role of Systems Analyst. This book does a good job of presenting the traditional role, methods and tools, while also providing insights into ways in which the field is transitioning. (For example, the authors present traditional DFDs and ERDs as well as UML notation.) Particularly useful are the case studies, including an integrated case study followed throughout and numerous stand-alone case studies. The language is clear; margin notes are used to highlight definitions and key concepts; there are ample illustrations. Only drawback is length (600+ pages), but that's more a problem with the field than this text in particular.
