Summary: Incomplete
Review: Remember the MCSE STUDY GUIDE NT 4, from A. Carter. Well, that was, is and ever will be the best study guide for nt 4 out there. It helped me pass the 3 core exams quite easly

The new MCSE STUDY SYSTEM core Windows 2000, in my opinion, sirves well to pass the Server and Pro 2000 exams. But NOT the other 2 core exams (network and AD. After chapter 8 i thougt that something was missing.. Yep, it covers network and AD material, BUT NOT ENOUGH. Unless you got a lot of experience in DNS and AD, i am not sure if you will pass these exams, (or with a lot of difficulty). Why, well check it out for yourself: Go to your local store and read other books about DNS (network) and AD exams, like Sybex or the Exam Preps etc, and you will find out that details, specialy AD, have been left out in Carter's book.

AD is a new (ok, a failed copy of NDS) and complex thing. Carter DOES NOT dedicate enough chapters to explain well the in and outs of AD. You MUST understand AD because it is one the most important items of Windows 2000.. it's the very heart of administrating a Window$ 2000 network

Be pacient: the MCSE WINDOWS 2000 is a long way, more difficult than MCSE WINDOWS NT4..and you must understand ACTIVE DIRECTORY and DNS

Summary: It is almost perfect but the CD...
Review: The book is quite good, I mean it covers almost all of the topics required with sufficient detail for 210 and 215 however it is definitely insufficient for other two core exams. I also like the friendly wording that Alan uses.

Here is why I gave 3 stars:

The CD supplied is totally useless when you consider you also pay for a practice CD.

You study chapters 1-5 and decide that it is the exam time, install BFQ, select chapters 1-5 and run, huh, whats that, a complicated Active Directory question show up, that you are sure the topic is not mentioned in chapter 2. This is because the question associated with chapters 2 and 13 ! and actually covered at chapter 13.

You say Ok, I'll wait to the end. Just when you finish all the topics of 70-210, before taking the exam, you prepare for an exam simulation, start BFQ, and a complete frustration, the simulated exam covers all four core exams ;( Nothing else in the CD is useful, and 2nd CD is put just to have a 2nd CD. AVI's demonstrate very basic steps for those facing the windows environment for the first time, although the book was intended for Intermediate and Advanced readers.

Opss.. at the end I found the patch for quizzer at IDG web site but nothing changed.

Well, as a final advice, buy the book, it will really help but do not expect much from the CDs.

Summary: Good book for General knowledge not MCSE Exam
Review: This book has too much of expnation for not very specific reason
It does not seperated the professional version and Server version Its very hard to mix NT and professional and Advance Server and Saerver in any giving chapter I wish he could seperate the material for each Exam through individual chapter for specific Exam or else take MCSE tittle off , and if you want to take for example 70-215 exam you have to look ot many chapters and read lots of none related explanation and practices, Bunch of Windows NT Ideas make an exam taker more confused, I find it boring none sense and too much waste of time If you want to take MCSE exam .

Summary: I like it.
Review: This is a pretty good book. Some errors, some omissions, but not too bad for 1500+ pages. A THOROUGH step-through of Windows 2000. Contains lots of insight that Microsoft Press nim-nim tech writers don't have a clue about or put in their books. I think Carter cares about his students, because he takes pains to explain in detail things tech writers usually leave out that can cause people's understanding to stumble. Seems like he learned the hard way, and wants to help others avoid what he went through. The Beachfront Quizzer test prep CD that comes with the book really sucks. It's the same pool of lousy test questions that Cramsession uses for their W2K Questions of the Day. It seems like a day doesn't go by that I find a Crammsession question that's wrong or just poorly done. I probably would rate it a five-star book without the Beachfront crap, but since IDG uses it to help market the book, the rating takes a hit - 4-star, no more.
