Rating: Summary: I was disappointed; the book was too simplistic for my needs Review: I purchased this book but just returned it because I was looking for better examples of nested queries and this book focused on more high level simplistic queries. I guess the method used to display information was okay for a beginner.
Rating: Summary: This book provides simple clear examples of SQL statements. Review: This book provides clear examples of SQL statements geared toward the beginner. I have found it highly useful as a companion for the class I am taking. Many times the textbook assigned to our class glossed over SQL statements and I used The Practical SQL Handbook to gain a clear explanation. Also, I found the CD-ROM included with the book quite useful in running sample queries to increase my understanding. I would definitely recommend this book for the beginner!
Rating: Summary: Not a good book for quick learners Review: This book is wordily! However if you are new to database stuff then this is a book for you. Otherwise this is not a good reference. Unfortunately my book doesn't come with a CD so I wasn't able to judge the CD yet.
Rating: Summary: Great Book!!!! Good reference book. Review: I got this book for a class I was taking. Good reference book, not really for learning purposes though.
Rating: Summary: Excellent SQL source for beginners and advanced developers Review: The book is extremely well written. It is organized and easy to follow. The sample queries (complete with results) are a big help in understanding the syntax. As a senior developer having "toyed" with SQL I realize now that I was only "toying" with it. Thanks.
Rating: Summary: Great book - bad cd Review: The book's approach and explanations are fantastic. I haveextensive experience with Access but none at all with real programmingand this book was exactly what I needed. However the cd containing the sample database and runtime version of SQL Anywhere is a huge mistake. Some of the first commands in the book will not work with this version (despite the author's "guarantees"). You must download a newer version from sybase before you can proceed. Thanks to GypsyPilot for that info!
Rating: Summary: Great Book if you want to know SQL basics and more...! Review: I really like this Book, it's my first time buying SQL book and it won't be the last! after finish this book all over... i will go on to another one... I learned alot from this book, i'm not a beginer for SQL but if you know some SQL and you don't know the Basics of SQL and RDBMS, this book is for you! I really like this book. BUY IT!
Rating: Summary: Buy this book to learn practical SQL Review: I needed to be able to learn practical SQL in a hurry, and this book was invaluable in learning this language in the absolute shortest amount of time of any I have read. Theory is briefly covered, which worked for me, since I was working with existing databases anyway. A super way to learn and use SQL in a hurry.
Rating: Summary: A tremendous intro to SQL Review: I found this book to be very informative. Unlike some reviewers, I didn't find find this book to really be geared toward one type of database or another. The authors had to use something, and Sybase SQL Anywhere was it. I felt that the authors of this book did a good job of keeping the SQL general, where it could be used on most databases. I used this book in conjunction with Personal Oracle8, and found that the basic commands are the same. However, after completing this book I would strongly suggest getting a book more specific to whatever database you use. Overall, this book gave me a solid foundation in being able to perform basic SQL functions (i.e creating views, tables, understanding business rules, etc.)and a great buy for someone with little to no knowledge about SQL.
Rating: Summary: None other comes close! Review: I have had this book for about a year now and I still use it quite regularly. It's really a great reference book. If you want to know how to do any kind of a join this book will show you in terms that are easy to understand. Because of this book there isn't a SQL statement that I can't wright. It's quite outstanding even if it's not a wrox book ;)
