Summary: One of a Kind
Review: I went to the local bookstore recently to check out some Swing books. Apparently, this is the only book that truly explains Swing in a realistic way. Go get this book because it's what you need; if you're just learning Java, I suggest the Deitel book.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent Introduction to Advanced Swing
Review: I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out more about advanced Swing. It is packed full with good examples and explanations of those examples.

The examples are very detailed and can be used as a starting point for your own projects.

Summary: Know your Swing First...
Review: I'm in total agreement with the person who bought this book as there introduction to Swing; _EXTREMELY_ bad idea. If you're looking for a good starting Java book this isn't it, but if you know Java & Swing well and now you want to learn more about exactly whats going on with Swing then buy this book. Otherwise find yourself a Beginner Swing book, or this will just sit on your shelf.

Summary: An all-inclusive resource for programmers
Review: Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Swing (the collaborative effort of software development experts Matthew Robinson and Pavel Vorobiev) is packed with over 400 pages of substantially revised text, new examples, and updated information specific to J2SE 1.4 and is successfully intended to be an all-inclusive resource for programmers looking to make the most of the Swing library for enhanced graphical user interface in their Java applications and software. Pages of examples, explanations, recommendations, step-by-step instructions and more make Swing a definitive self-teaching aid and resource for intermediate to advanced level programmers.

Summary: Very well written with good examples
Review: One of the best book for understanding Swing components. I have had problems with rendering particularly with JList, JTree, and after eeading this book, everything seems so simple. The material is so unique that will be very helpful for serious Java/Swing programmers.

Summary: Author comments
Review: Our goal was to write a book that contains enough explanation and examples to satisfy the most demanding Swing developer, while still catering to the motivated newcomer. We feel that we have accomplished this goal in a unique and generous way. From day one our manuscript has been freely available on the web. By responding and reacting to all feedback and suggestions we received, this book has taken on many diverse perspectives. Together with our own efforts, the Swing developer community has helped shape this book into its current form. All text and source code is freely available, as well as a publicly accessible online forum where anybody (not just book owners) can ask questions to us or the forum audience in general. If this book sells well enough we plan to write a second edition based on JDK 1.3.

Summary: Index is useless
Review: The book is pretty good for swing. The index is to general to be useful. It works better as a 'read through' book, rather than a reference book that you can use the index to look up tips. For example, if you decide to look up some uses of JDesktopPane, the index simply lists all the pages talking about JDesktopPane, it does not list any sub-headings for the topic. Other than the useless index, I like the book.

Summary: 2nd Edition Has Typos out the Wazoo
Review: The depth of coverage is excellent. If you want to see examples that are more than toy applications, this is for you.

Unfortunately, an otherwise excellent book is marred by a surprising number of typos and errors. Provided one has a satisfactory understanding of the material, it is possible to intuit what the authors intended to say. Aggravating this problem is the lack of published errata.

Whoever edited the 2nd edition should be fired (if they haven't been already).

Summary: A good swing reference
Review: The philosophy of Swing model is explained in good detail. The advanced widgets and intriguing problems with them(e.g. the JTree with double click with some delay resulting in cell editing) is dealt with very nicely. Helpful code snippets.
