Rating: Summary: Not A Reference - This Is a Must Have Learning Book Review: Brown has put a lot of thought into covering the mass of practical bases in Windows .NET Forms development. The concept of developing one application through the course of the book to show clearly and in context how each piece fits and works, while not new, is done superbly in this book. I learned much, much more from this book about not only Windows Forms but about C# programming in general than from several other dedicated C# books I have. His approach to showing the code and code changes and explaining them in step-by-step and in side-by-side panels is outstanding tutorial style.I just had to work through this book cover-to-cover and I NEVER do that with these books - I usually just look up what I think I need to know. Brown's leading me by the nose worked; I learned a lot more (as a current C++ and Java programmer) about C# than I might have otherwise. If you're looking for a reference book, this is not it; context is too important to the understanding of the parts. It is, I think, deliberately a clear learning book and, as I say in the title of this review, a Must Have learning book for Windows .NET Forms. So what's your next topic, Eric?
Rating: Summary: My first .NET book - exactly what I looked for Review: Erik Brown's book was exactly what I looked for. This book introduces .NET Graphical User Interface for Windows Applications. Each chapter starts with the motivation, followed by a step-by-step instructions for Visual Studio users, C# source code and a discussion explaining the code. Erik Brown pauses to explain C# keywords not familiar to C++ / Java programmers, and a relevant .NET Framework Class documentation precedes each example. This book gave me the jump-start I needed to start writing Windows Applications, and it covers 99% percent of the GUI components I would probably need. I recommend this book both for experienced Windows application developers (migrating from Win32, MFC or Java) and newcomers to Windows application programming familiar only with ANSI C++.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book on Windows.Forms.NET Review: I give Erik Brown 5 stars because it's the best book I have read so far. I hope he will write more books in the future!
Rating: Summary: The only Software Enr. Book on Windows Form Review: i have about 30 book on C# (4 of them about W F) but this the only one that worth the money (maybe more) , Thanks for Mr.Erik and we are waiting for another great book on C# like that,The books begin from the first to the professional level in W F with C#. I LIKE THAT ONE and i think you will like it too
Rating: Summary: Best tech book I've ever read Review: I have read at least 40 or 50 tech books, and this has got to be the best. The tutorial format is great and perfectly designed, and Brown explains everything completely so you're never lost. I learned both C# and windows forms programming from this book and it was a sheer joy every moment. I do ASP.NET programming using VB as part of my job, and this was the perfect way to extend my skills and knowledge. Effective and very fun. Plus you'll be amazed at the applications you end up with if you work all the tutorials. I've been using it as a reference ever since I finished it, and it's very effective for that as well, thanks in part to the excellent index.
Rating: Summary: Looking to learn windows forms? - this is THE BOOK! Review: I have to agree with the rest of the reviewers - this is an excellent book. I've programmed for over 15 years now and have read over 100 programming books during that span. This book stands out as one of, if not the best, programming books I've ever read. The book is about 600 pages long, and focuses on building a photo album application. It's clearly written, easy to follow, and provides step by step instructions on how to create the application within Visual Studio.Net. As the rear of the book says, this is a book for beginner to intermediate level programmers. If you're looking to learn windows forms, this is a fantastic place to start. Great job Erik Brown!!!
Rating: Summary: Great transition from VB 4 Review: I last wrote code for a living about 6 years ago (Visual Basic 4). The opportunity came up to do some coding in C# and I was recommended this book after buying a few duds. I have to say, as an introduction to C# and .Net, this is the best book I've read yet. The format is excellent and the project is easy to follow. I originally got the book for programming controls but was surprised to find that most of the object-oriented programming concepts were summarised well without being explicitly discussed.
If you need an introduction to object-oriented programming without all the hocus-pocus then this is for you.
From my experience, get a general C# introduction first. When you get to the OOP section, start reading this book and complete the project. Then go back and finish the first book. As other reviewers have mentioned, DB programming is not covered, but as I'm using Microsoft's data access application block it didn't matter to me.
Rating: Summary: Great book, many examples, great appendix Review: I loved this book. The examples were very good and there were plenty of them. The book starts from scratch, and at a low level and works through a sample application, with each chapter building on the last(for the most part). I had played with C# a little before reading this book, and this book gives me a great start and understanding of Windows Forms and C# programming. This ranks as one of the better books I've read in a while. Highly recommend.
Rating: Summary: Looking to learn windows forms? - this is THE BOOK! Review: I must admit that I agree with the other reviewers, because I was VERY impressed with this book, considering some of the junk that's being published these days. It's organization was well thought out; the explanations and layout of the code examples was very easy to follow, though the content was not for the C# or programming novice (thankfully); and even the print type was easy on the eyes. It's refreshing to find a book that's truly well worth the money. It's a great book that I consider one of the best in my library.
