Summary: Very Disorganised , Repetitive
Review: This books goes back and forth between VB.net and C#.net
and Refer to Old ASP. (I never used old ASP)
Basically, I paid money thinking that I am getting a book on ASP.net with VB.net.
Rally feel like I wasted the money, as I am not happy with my purchase.
This book may be good for people who know both VB.net and C#.net
Otherwise don't waste your money.

Summary: There needs to be two!
Review: This is a great book and I would suggest it if you are learning ASP.NET. However!!! There really does need to be two books, one for VB.NET and one for C#. Most of the examples are in VB.net and this make it frustrating for C# developers.

The book claims this does not matter, but it does.

Summary: Very good ASP.NET book
Review: This is an excellent ASP.NET book with a lot of very useful content. I think this book should be suggested reading for all ASP.NET developers.

So why only 3 stars?

The format of the book is horrible. This is a 1400-page softcover. It is IMPOSSIBLE to read comfortably except maybe in zero gravity. It is criminal that high-tech publishers routinely charge for a shapeless lump of paper. Make it hardcover - make the page size bigger - break it into 3 tomes. These solutions have been around for ages. How did Wrox not hear about them?

Summary: Better to use Free Online Resources
Review: This is an incredibly chunky book that somehow never gets to the important points. WROX assembled a number of authors for this publication and unfortunately this has resulted in a lack of flow/consistency.

Most of the important topics are covered by the book - but they covered in a manner where it can be incredibly hard to get something useful.

I bought this book looking for a good reference by my side - instead I find the online help sites and forums much more productive.

I hope you find this review helpful - please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Summary: Solid content. Supplement with MSDN.
Review: This is definitely one of the better books out there on ASP.NET. However, beginners to the concept of ASP in general, will find this book a bit hard to understand. Nevertheless, most of the concepts have been explained well, although the writers have shown their language preference by using most examples in VB.NET.

Summary: Occasionally Great, Usually Mediocre
Review: This was just about the first ASP.NET book out there. The first edition dates back almost a year! Many ASP.NET developers used this to get started (like me), and believe me, it wasn't always easy. There are some great parts, some incredibly repetitive parts (the effect of having so many authors), and some infuriating mistakes. Finally they fixed those in this edition--did anyone else but me struggle with the completely wrong description of security rule priority?

The factual problems are fixed in this version, but it is still a painfully disorganized way to learn. It's best for programmers with hefty .NET and ASP experience. Many fundamentals (like session state) just aren't covered. Now there are other best first choices. I particularly like ASP.NET The Complete Reference (McGraww Hill), which has a comprehensive look at code-behind development, VS.NET, and best practices, which most books ignore. ANother good one is Programming ASP.NET (Oreilly) which covers everthing in VB and C#! AsP.nET unleashed is a solid title too (very comprehensive), but it is a little wonky in places. Who would use a database trigger to write a file on updates? That's one of the most unscalable ideas i've ever heard. One thing I've discovered is that books that pretend to be more specific, like e-commerce with ASP.NET, or data-driven sites with ASP.NET, are really just basic ASP.NET introductions that don't cover all the features. You are best off (right now at least) with an all in one.

In short, this book will do, and has good parts. But why bother now that other books (written carefully by a single guru instead of patched together from a whole comittee) are available?

Summary: Professional HUH?
Review: Usually the Professional series explains the more advanced topics, NOT THIS BOOK! It is a lot of fluff about how great .NET will be but it doesn't explain how to use it. It typically says here's a control, gee that's great, then leaves you hanging for any kind of information which isn't available. Samples are too simple and not enough of them. This book should be called "An Overview of ASP.NET". If that's what you need then I guess this book is for you. We are looking for an advanced book on ASP.NET, does anyone know of a good advanced book?

Summary: A Torch In The Dark
Review: When ASP.NET was introduced it sounded like a lot of our development problems were solved. Web Functionality doubled, dev time halved, it sounded too good to be true; which it was, as actually getting our heads around serious dev issues with this new technology meant a very steep, almost overhanging learning curve, often stopping dead where the MSDN online help finished. One of the guys nipped down the book shop one lunch and came back with this book. We havent used the online help since. It covers just about everything you need to know to get your first show on the road. at just over 1300 pages there is a lot to take in, but its worth it if your taking it seriously. The book tackles ASP.NET specifics rather than design techniques so if your looking down that road i would recommend another wrox title ASP.NET Distributed Data Applications as this covers more of the hows and whys of data driven sites.
