Summary: SQL Server Bible!
Review: If you've tried finding answers about SQL Server on Microsoft's Web site, you already know that Microsoft's documentation is a mishmash of manuals, technical notes, and forum discussions. It's virtually impossible to get a clear picture of how to use SQL Server from this stuff. SQL Server 2000 Developer's Guide is a great "master index" to SQL Server 2000 -- it covers everything! But more than that, it provides complete, _working_ examples on the accompanying CD, which is a vast improvement over Microsoft's unusable code "snippets." I especially like the charts that relate SQL Server features to tasks and capabilities. This makes it easy to figure out what SQL thing to use to accomplish a particular task. Better, the book gives you step-by-step procedures so that you do things in the right order, rather than thrashing around in Microsoft's peculiar dialog boxes. This book doesn't cover every aspect of SQL Server in detail -- it's an essential adjunct to Microsoft documentation rather than a replacement for it. But I never needed a replacement to the manuals, just a map with example code and lots of helpful tips. That's what SQL Server 2K DevGuide is!

Summary: Essential!
Review: Paul Conte and Michael Otey have written a most excellent reference for SQL Server 2000 development. The examples, explanations, and sample code are precise and easy to understand. As a developer, I think that having a good basic understanding of SQL Server administration is essential, and this book provides just what I need. I recommend this book to any SQL Server 2000 developer.

Summary: SQL Server Developer's Guilde....NOT
Review: The book title is some what misleading since there is a lot of coverage on front end developement. When I purchased this book I was expecting a strictly SQL Server Developer book, not a visual basic programmers reference, it also through me off when I discovered 4 chapters dedicated just to SQL Server Administration. If you want a jack of all trades book then this book might help, but it is certainly not just strictly for SQL Server development only which is what I was looking for.

Summary: Look elsewhere...
Review: This book is too broad in the subject area that it addresses and ends up lacking in topics where details are important. The amount of disparate bits and pieces gives the book a messy and shallow feeling. How this book attracted 5 stars from other reviewers baffles me. Don't be fooled by the thickness of the book. Most "jack of all trade" books are thick and useless. Try "SQL Server 2000 Programming by Example" by Guerrero and Rojas for a more focused text.

Summary: The Best SQL Server 2000 book out there!
Review: This book really covers SQL Sever 2000 with clear, uncomplicated explanations and useful examples. I have used it as a reference guide to answer questions that have come up, as well as a jumping off point for writing my own applications to SQL Server 2000. I can cut and paste the code from the CD right into my programs.

The authors cover many of SQL Server 2000's features including: T-SQL's DDL and DML, stored procedures and triggers, ADO and ASP, XML, SQL-DMO, DTS, security, backup and recovery, and more. Having so much practical information all in one place has sure been a time saver for me.

A very well rounded and easy to read book. Definitely a must have!

Summary: Good overall reference
Review: This is a hefty book that so far looks like a good choice for my first SQL Server 2000 book. The core stuff on T-SQL and ADO is solid and does a good job on new features like cascading foreign keys. The additional topics are what have really made this book a good value for me. As examples, this is the first SQL Server book I've found that grapples with Windows 2000 Server Active Directory and how to use it with SQL Server security. The XML coverage is also top notch and got me over several hurdles quickly. Some of the admin areas, like backup and recovery, aren't covered as deeply as in books targeted specifically at DBAs, however.

The writing is very clear and direct and there's lots of example code. Although I've found a few typos, so far the technical information seems accurate. In several places, the authors provide useful tables that bring together information that's spread around different topics in the on-line documentation. I also found their recommendations for specific database settings and coding techniques helpful.

Summary: Great Job AGAIN!!!!
Review: You guys again did a great job on this book! I owned your previous version for SQL Server 7 and thought it was great and wrote a great review. Subsequently when the next version came out, I received an email from either Paul Conte or Michael Conte asking me if I wanted a complementary copy of the new book. Of course I said yes (sorry Amazon, I didn't buy the 2000 version from you) and it arived ASAP. Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to use SQL Server 2K until about a week ago and have found the book invaluable since then. It is not a book for beginners, however, it is written in a straight forward manor and is enjoyable to read (how many technical books can you say are enjoyable to read?) and gives me the info I need to develop apps. utilizing SQL Server. Thanks again for a great, well written technical book!!!
