Summary: Probably the best Access book out there
Review: Great Content Beginner to Intermediate. I would have like to see more on advanced concepts though. I wish that they had put the final chapter in print (rather than on CD). I used this book so much I wore out the binding...

Summary: One Stop Access
Review: Had a limited knowledge of the Access application prior to purchase of this book. I am now have sufficient knowledge to not only make my job easier, but impress my superiors at work.

Summary: Disapointed with the CD-ROM
Review: I agree with another reviewer. The CD-ROM examples were not what was discussed in the book. And the free software doesn't even attempt to work. I feel that most of the Access books were rushed to press to capitalize on the popularity of the software rather than on teaching good database programming.

Summary: A Quick-Read for the Advanced/Multi-Language Developer
Review: I am degreed computer scientist with almost twenty years in this field; so, I was not looking for a book on VBA syntax. I can read the grammar for a language, and determine what is/is not legal syntactically. Additionally, because of my experience and formal training, I was not looking for a cookbook of algorithms (I develop better algorithms than most authors.) What I was looking for was a no-nonsense, quick-read of Access' features and development environment--something this book does very well. On the negative side, the analysis and design techniques covered in the book are pathetic at best. They do little justice to this book. Plus, the authors never cover the most important area in the system development life cycle; namely, business process analysis.

Summary: Errors in the text and unclear definitions
Review: I am using this book as the text for an internet class on Access and am very disappointed in the clarity and quality of the book. The database names on the CD do not correspond the text. Explanations of concepts, for example the different types of relationships, I found to be more clearly defined in the Microsoft manuals that come with Access. There are places where the text refers to an example that does not correspond to the text (e.g. pointing out that an option must be selected and it is not checked in the example).

There must be a better written book!!!

Summary: Great Book for Novice Users and Developers
Review: I bought this 1400 page to learn different parts of Access forms and reports. What I found was this book taught me Access from the ground up. I already had used databases and Access for a few months so I just skipped Parts I and II and used the last 900 pages. What I found was a great example that I could jump right into, skip around and still be productive. The best coverage of queries, forms, and reports, More than I expected. I was thoroughly pleased with this book.

Summary: GREAT!
Review: I bought this because I have never seen or used a database. The instructions were the BEST I have ever seen for any software product EVER! There was never one time that I was left dangling because what the book said I would see on the screen was not what I got. I have 2 separate databases that I am currently designing for 2 separate office applications that I own.

Summary: Good for beginners
Review: I don't know what everyones problems are with this book. I have read it from cover to cover and enjoyed learning all it had to offer. It isn't made for advanced users, as it states on it's cover. However, for beginners, this book is excellent. It will teach you to do everything needed for creating a general database. However, if you are an advanced user it would be a waste of good money. I was new to database programming, and found that with this book and another on Visual Basic, I was able to program a very impressive database that is currently in use be several users of my organization. It is the backbone of the business. So, if you need to learn Access from the start, this book is an excellent starting point.

Summary: Full Of Holes
Review: I found that this book it glanced over some basic subject matters like conversion of text into different data types. It also contains numerous typos. As a beginners guide, this book is ok but it is not a comprehensive reference manual.

Summary: a reader from Kansas
Review: I found this book to be truly comprehensive and well designed for my first two databases. Now I am writing a third - yet more complex - database, that requires interfacing with Internet and some VB code. And although I was able to find almost everything I needed in this book the first two times around, I now have to move on to more sophisticated sources.

Having said this, I still highly recommend Access 97 Bible for anyone who wants to start out with databases.
