Summary: Good content but why is 25% on CD-ROM?
Review: Finally an overdue book on version 5.0! The content is great and deserves a 5 star rating. It is what we have been waiting for. But somethings missing....

Why are chapters 2, 4, 8, 11, 14, 18, 22 and 28 on CD-ROM??? This is over 400 pages of information. Imagine the surprise when you flip to Chapter 4 "Advanced Programming with C++ Builder" and the chapter consists of 1 page saying "The complete text for this chapter appears on the CD-ROM".

Can somebody out there explain this? Next time make the book larger and with a hardcover (It should have been so anyway), or split it into a two volume set. I give the layout 1 star. Final rating : 3

Summary: It's about time C++Builder 5 got a book!
Review: First off, there are two things that would have made this book better. Not putting any chapters on the CD (and lose a lot of value), and make it a hardcover instead of the flimsy glue-back binding. I like my textbooks to be strong and able to fold out on a desk and not bend permanently. This one as thick as it is really should be a hardcover.

On to more important things...

The content is excellent. A lot of possible space wasting images have been left out which leaves a lot more information. There are plenty of images to get the point across. It starts out with chapters explaining the more simple features and ending with OpenGL & DirectX, and Creating Help Files. The contained CD is excellent and makes a great example for other authors to go by. The installation program actually works! Source code, 3rd party programs, 60 day trial of C++Builder 5, components, and other goodies are included on the CD.

The Debugging Applications chapter is one I plan on spending a lot of time with. It includes great pictures and explanations galore of Builder's debug window setup.

The layout as well as overall content is what is to be expected of a Developers Guide. I own hundreds of technical books and this one is right up there with my best ones! This team of authors did a great job of combining skills.

Summary: Having several difficulties reading this book
Review: I am reading through this book and have experienced the following
issues:

1. The CD does not contain the examples that the author
refers to in the book. Chapter 2 refers to a debug
example on the CD and Chapter 3 refers to a DragDrop
project. Both these projects do not exist on the CD. I had
to stop and write a review at this point where I am only
in Chapter 3... 2. Many sections in the book are not organized and leave
the reader totally confused. Chapter 3 explains about
frames... I had to skip that section as I could not
understand anything. A constructive example would be
much better.

I am somewhat disappointed with the publisher

Summary: Powerful Resource - Well Deserving 5-Stars
Review: I don't do a lot of programming so I was able to put off buying this book until just recently. I've been so pleased with it that I know now I should have bought it long ago. It's very well written and full of hands-on real world examples. Reading and understanding the Authors is very uncomplicated. They take you from VCL basics to serious in-depth development quickly with articulate facundity. I've found the chapter on Windows API programming to be especially benefecial. If you do any programming with CPP Builder you're unlikely to get very far without this book. Also worth mentioning, I've found most of this book to be an excellent reference for earlier versions including CPP Builder 3 as well.

I found the complaints about the chapters on CD-ROM to have no real merit. The chapters on the CD could easily have made up another volume to be purchased seperately. I consider it something extra. The book contains almost 1400 pages of excellent documentation and reference text and on it's own measure earns a 5 star rating.

Summary: Best C++ Builder 5 Book in Book Stores
Review: I have been looking around for C++ Builder 5 books and only managed to find this book. It is well-written but certain chapters are on the CD-ROM instead of being printed which I find very inconvenient.

Summary: Exelent
Review: I is a good book for c++ builder 5. Beginners can also use this book. If you are begineri it will be better to reed quick start book that comes in pdf format before reading it. There are not everything that is needed. For exaple socket controls have no good exaple and it is hard for beginers to understand how to use them. But you will not be able to find better book for C++ Builder it is useful also for intermidiate programers.

If you are looking for c++ Builder book bye it. It is impossible to find better now. Perhaps some great books for C++builder will be publishd in 2001.

Summary: The ONLY book available on Borland C++ Builder 5.
Review: If you're tired of the frustration of trying to put together a
simple Windows application in Visual C++ and like us, have
discovered the future of C++ programming in Windows with Borland
C++ Builder 5, you'll be thankful this book is available.

If you've ever been to a bookstore you know that the ratio of
Visual C++ books to Borland C++ Builder books is about 100:1.
That's unfortunate considering BCB is the far better product.

With that in mind, this book is as good as they come and it's
the only one that is current with the latest version of Builder.

My only gripe is that it's very similar to the Developer's
Guide that comes with the product when you purchase it. So you
will get 90% of the content of this book with the manual that
is included when you buy the software. The other 10% you won't
get is basically a few chapters on graphics and OpenGL and a few other things here and there. Plus this book is more readable and
friendly than the raw manual which is more for reference.

You can't go wrong with this book because it actually focuses
on the C++ Builder 5 product unlike other books which merely
talk about the C++ language not specific to Builder.

Summary: The book on C++ Builder I was looking for!
Review: OK, so there haven't been a lot of them. Nevertheless, this one will be tough to beat. I just got the book and have already found several topics that simply aren't covered (or covered well) in other tomes. The chapters on compiling/optimizing, debugging, and DLLs and Plug-Ins alone are worth the price of the book. The chapters on COM/DCOM are a tad short, but not the worst I've seen. I am also pleased with the chapter on Microsoft Office integration. The early chapters on programming with C++ Builder 5 and user interface principles were also excellent. All in all, I'm glad I got it "hot off the presses" and I'm sure I'll get plenty of wear and tear out of it before too long. A satisfying purchase. :)
