Review: As a developer used to 'classic ASP,' I was searching for a good place to get some .Net concepts under my belt quickly. Thus far, ASP.Net for Dummies hasn't disappointed.

While the book is definitely easier to read than many of the technical titles I own, it is not so dumbed down that you get nothing useful out of it.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick look at ASP.Net or VB.Net

Summary: Excellent book for those new to .NET and programming
Review: ASP.NET for Dummies is an excellent book for the beginning .NET developer and programmer. I am a web designer that decided to learn to code for the web using something other than Javascript and HTML. The book was great to learn programming basics as well as getting me up and running in .NET. I have started down a path of learning a great code language, VB, and I owe it to this book. Highly recommended.

Review: ASP.NET for Dummies was the best choice when I decided to learn ASP.NET. The book is funny, easy to understand, and for me (a foreigner) the english is pretty cool to understand. I'm sure this book will be very helpfull for every one who needs to learn an WEB-language. Congratulations to the author!

Review: At first I was pretty skeptical of the dummies series. I have a B.S. in computer science and I am fairly adept at programming with Java and C++. I was afraid that this book wouldn't be able to go into the level of detail that I needed to complete the project I was working on. I originally started with Microsoft Press's ASP.NET and ADO.NET - usually a good series. But this book was much better. It is very straightforward and the sample code that comes with the CD is invaluable. At approximately $25 - it's worth every penny - especially considering most books on the topic are well over $50. I would recommend this book to anyone who knows a little bit about Relational Databases and Object Oriented Programming. It's particularly valuable for someone who already knows Visual Basic and just needs a little help getting up and running with ASP/ADO.NET. The only problem I encountered with the book is that it fails to mention when using MS Access and ADO - you have to be careful not to use reserved words. One of the sample programs provided with the book - Classy Classifieds - won't run properly unless you change the authors database field and every reference to in the code from Password to Pssword or something else. But that is really not a big deal and I still give this book 5 stars.

Review: Buy Murach's ASP.NET web programming with VB.NET. The "Dummies" will give no value to a developer. The previous book mentioned will get you up and running.

Summary: ASP.NET for Classic ASP'ers Part 2
Review: Combine this book with the free Microsoft product called Web Matrix (...) and you've got the total solution. Web Matrix allows you to view your code exactly as it appears in the book, plus many of the extended controls can be dragged and dropped... If you can't make the move from Classic ASP to ASP.NET with this combination, then you might want to pursue another vocation.

Web Matrix builds code for you, including SMTP Mail and basic CRUD (create, retrieve, update, delete) database functions, HTML elements and web controls. It even allows you to copy code snippets to a clipboard that doesn't go away, organize them, and paste them wherever you want. This is a great product that's a perfect fit for the book, and the two are a powerful solution for getting real work done right away.

editor:how do I set up voting?

When I considered this book, I did so as someone that has "heard" of ASP.NET. I haven't touched a book on it. Whilst I don't see myself as a "dummy", I felt that the treatment of the "Dummies" book would be precision for me in light of my "virgin" status with ASP.NET. Whilst maranGraphics' visual books appear to have a well earned place in the learning task here (I think so), I find the "Dummies" book can have a place too.

Not knowing anything about "ASP.NET", "ASP.NET for Dummies" handled me as I needed to be. As someone that was a "virgin" to "ASP.NET", in respect of the human learning mechanism, I feel obliged to recommend it.

After reading the whole book, it became apparent to me that I needed another type of tutoring, for which "ASP.NET for Dummies" isn't made for and shouldn't be. The book plays a role. With learning one can make progress and with this, the role of the book comes to its natural end. And so I found maranGraphics' "Visual Blueprint: ASP.NET" had a place. It filled many gaps left behind by the "ASP.NET for Dummies" book. maranGraphics have found a way to bring my mind to tune in with aspects of the computing phenomenon I am trying to handle and apply for my own needs.

In using "ASP.NET", we are using computers and software and so many tasks are performed visually; at least the tool used to produce "ASP.NET" applications is handled visually. Once you have finished with this book ("ASP.NET for Dummies"), I recommend another; one that allows you to learn at the level you are now at (not "virgin").

Personally, I purchased 2 more books.

1) maranGraphic's "Visual Blueprint: ASP.NET". It had some of the additional tutoring I needed.

2) An "ASP.NET" "bible" type book.

My mix (what works for me and my friends): begin with "Dummies" then progress to maranGraphics' visual books.

Review: Even though I had a reasonable background in using vb.net, I just couldn't put all the pieces together for ASP.NET when using Microsoft's ASP.net with VB .net (G. Andrew Duthie). After reading ASP.NET for Dummies, the ASP.NET technology finally started to make sense.
Now I've been able to return to G. Andrew Duthie's book and get more out of it.
One negative comment though--even though vb.net still supports much of the old vb6 style programming, the book should have used the .net OOP style throughout.
