Rating: Summary: DON'T BUY THIS BOOK Review: I bought this book hoping I could get alot of help learning C++. So I started reading and as soon as I got to Day 9, the world turned black. Some of the examples are downright confusing and must have ripped out hand-fuls of hair attempting to understand his examples. If I had the choice, I would love to get my money back because the book is just terrible.
Rating: Summary: Not very good Review: Sometimes Sams makes a good teach yourself, this time it didn't. Most of the time you're working with MFC, which may be good for some people, it's not useful for people who are considering C++ as their job.
Rating: Summary: Good Starter Book Review: This is an excellent C++ book for beginners yet covers enough to have a thorough understanding of the language. What didn't make this book 5 stars though, is that it contained some errors in the examples and also in some places, unorganized. It would talk about strings and parsing in an example without going through it first. Also some important things were left out like the basic definiton of BOOL. All in all, its a great book. I have the third edition.
Rating: Summary: This is definitely a masterpiece! Review: Hmmm... It's always difficult to write a review about such a good book. But let me explain... I'm a former C programmer who once decided to learn C++. And I decided to start learning from the very beginning. It was really difficult to choose a book for that purpose, cause amount of C++ tutorials is really huge. But finally I made my choice. I choose "Teach Yourself in C++ in 21 Days".Why did I do that? Because this book was written by Teacher. It's very easy to read and understand, but in spite of simplicity it's really comprehensive. Every word is on it's place, every example of source code is well thought-out. I have seen some reviews blaming this book for something, but I'm sure - if you have some brain and are ready to think and learn this book will help you. I do recommend this book to EVERYBODY.
Rating: Summary: This book is definitely a masterpiece Review: Hello all! It's really hard to write something comprehensive about a Book like this. But let's begin from the beginning. I'm a Russian C programmer who once decided to learn C++. I didn't want to relearn from one language to another so I just decided to start from the very beginning. I went to the book store and was really lost in the number of titles and authors of C++ books. Then I have noticed this Book and was a bit skeptic about it. 21 days... it looked like kind of something unreal. Anyway I bought it. And when I started reading it, it was like Newton's apple (you see what I mean). I've never seen such a simple written but comprehensive resource. The Book was written by a Teacher and Professional. Every question was answered, every blind spot was lit, and every doubt was washed away. And all of that was made with a lot of great made examples of source code. It's a masterpiece I claim. And I recommend it to EVERY ONE who want to get fluent in C++ quickly and easily.
Rating: Summary: Misleading about Visual C++ Review: This book comes bundled with a DOS (Console Based) compiler and MS Visual C++ 6.0 Intro Version. The box leads you to believe that you would learn to use VC++, but you only learn the basics of just plain C++. If you are looking for a book on how to make windows applications in C++, you will be highly disappointed. It does cover the basics of the C++ language in a general sense, but no one wants to just learn generic programming.
Rating: Summary: Don't hesitate! Review: As you go through this book, you keep asking yourself: "So, when is the heavy stuff comming?", and then you finish up on day 21 amazed at the fact that there is really not much more to learn. This book is going to give you valuable understanding of both C++ and OOP. At least it did that for me. I wasn't really new at OOP when I started reading this book, but I wasn't 100% clear with it either(just a little bit of Delphi here and there). As far as C++, I had no idea. It won't make you the best programmer in the world, but next time you talk about multiple inheritance, you will know what you are talking about. It is an excellent starting point. And, yes, it really does take 21 days.
Rating: Summary: From Wright brothers to rocket science! Review: My boss gave me the assignment to learn C++. He gave me a couple of books that he though were good. I banged my head against the keyboard many a night in pure frustration trying to absorb the material and searching the Web for additional help. I next tried an on line computer course by a noted and popular school. Everything was geared to people who already knew C. The material was dated. It was like trying to learn rocket science by studying the notes the Wright brothers wrote when they were trying to figure out which way a propeller should turn. I finally came across Jesse's 3rd edition of "Leaning C++ in 21 Days" and life if beautiful again. His examples and easily read text gave me the knowledge to read code, and more important to understand it. The book takes the time to explain terms, definitions and the why's and wherefores of the C++ language. Particularly interesting to me was memory management and why I should be concerned about it. I no longer bang out code that "just" works. I assimilate the books ideas into programs that one may call an art form. You will never know how grateful I am to have this book as a resource. I have scribbled in the margins, highlighted, dog-eared, paper clipped important pages, made a file of example programs and on long study nights used it as a pillow. I can't wait to get "C++ Unleashed" and abuse it in the same loving way! If you don't have prior programming experience this book is a must. If you are a C programmer you need this book to get with the new way of doing programming!
Rating: Summary: Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days by Jesse Liberty Review: This is an excellent introduction to the C++ programming language. The author has a clear straight-forward writing style which is easy to follow. If you are looking for a good introductory text on C++ I heartily recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Dense and bland Review: To put bluntly, I would not reccomend this book for beginners. I have a background in C, asp/VBScript and thought the book was confusing. I was using this book in order to learn OOP before I had to take a C++ course in school for the fall. The examples were poorly written, and ended up confusing me about classes and objects. I became so frustrated that I stopped reading the book entirely and am in search of another.
