Rating: Summary: Starts Well, Gets Confusing Review: The book starts well enough for the first several chapters and gives good examples that are relevant to the topicHowever as the book progresses the author delves very quickly into complex programming examples and explanations that gloss over a lot of subject matter and soon leave the begginer scratching his head. Some of the examples are indeed too complex for where they are placed in the book, for example the example on strings makes use of passing references to a function, which hasn't been covered yet leaving the begginer scratching his/her head trying to figure out what's going on without understanding the program. This book is best used as a companion book to other C++ references.
Rating: Summary: Tilhas Teezee! Review: Wow! This book is baydot super! It taught me everything I know about C++, and I programmed a software called E.D.B.T.Z. 2000, which is a really common software package for database programmers here in Tizak!
Rating: Summary: Don't buy this book Review: This book doesn't teach c++, it teachs you boring code that looks like c++. It says that it can teach you game development, yeah right, if you want a real c++ book, get learn microsoft visual c++ now from microsoft, at least you learn what you want to learn. For game development, get Windows Game Programming for Dummies, its much better. This title of this book she be "Sam Teaches you C++ in 21 years"
Rating: Summary: A great title but not able to learning 21days.. Review: I was read this book, when i met c++ first. ".....21days." <-- i can't agree this title. c++ is so hard to learn short term. Rating: Summary: A good in-depth primer Review: I think this book is very good, highly reccomended. What I like about Jessie, is that he is trying to teach you to be a programmer, not just a language. I thought the chapter on "basic classes" was a work of art, just a pleasure to read. On passing variables he explains when and why you use a pointer vs. a reference ... not just how to do it. He also has a great disscusion on stack memory vs. free store memory. The second half of the book does move much faster and the concepts were less explained. Warning: you have to know the first half of the book "stone cold" to get anything out of the second half. I found myself going back and re-reading and reviewing previous chapters then moving-on. This book could have 950 page book instead of 650, but no one book is totally perfect or all-encompassing. There will allways be another C++ book to read !
Rating: Summary: Still baffled Review: I have to agree with the review of Jan. 16. I opened the package, read a few pages and tried the "Hello world" program which produced compiling errors each time it attempted to use the gcc that was included. In my opinion if a publishing house can't send useable software with its books then no matter how well written they are they are useless.
Rating: Summary: Very Good, but has room for improvement. Review: This is a great book that covers a vast area of C++ topics. Through well written context, Jesse Liberty is able to teach the most advanced concepts without wading through unecessary detail and confusion. Having that said, I must warn you that there is definate room for improvement. While I agree with many people who have read the book, the pointers and references section is very well done, I have to say that the Arrays section is very poorly explained. The author does not go into enough detail, and his first example of using an Array is far too advanced for the first example (he dives right into using indexing and a for loop). That was the only 'bad' chapter of the entire book. It was so bad, I had to seek out a reference on the internet to have this topic properly explained. Other than that gripe, the book is great! Very well written, littered with humour. I reccamend (spelled right?) this book to any thriving student that searches for a good C++ book.
Rating: Summary: Easy to understand Review: I am a student finishing my second quarter of C++, and I have used this book more than I have used the textbook that we were assigned. Over half of the students in this class have bought this book also; not because the instructor has in any way endorsed it, but because of word of mouth from other students. I can't think of a better recomendation than that. Thanks to the author for making a very difficult subject easier to understand.
Rating: Summary: Wanna learn C++ from scratch, get this book Review: With no previous C orC++ experience, I began reading this book; I love it. The book uses examples and excercises so effectively to teach the reader. It covers almost everything one needs to know about the language. The authur almost left no stone unturn. I defintley recommend it for beginners.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: The book teaches you alot. I understood it as I am only 16. It does not teach you a whole lot about graphics so I had to seach the web for that. Teaches you alot about the fundementals of programing.
