Rating: Summary: A must have technical reference for Access Programmers Review: It's rare that I provide feedback on books, but in this instance I feel I must. Most of the books I've come across give me little or no help, i.e. they provide me with information I already know. It seems like most authors these days seem to spout out information without providing a clear understanding of how the application works. It's like they are resting on their laurels. Others claim to be "Bibles" that just inform me of the new features, but they are lacking in the content I need when I'm programming. This is the technical reference book for Access I have been looking for. The content is well explained and explained so that I know the considerations of choosing one method over another. The text is concise and knowledge level covers the spectrum. Alison's Black-Belt Chapter on library databases, builders and wizards was the icing on the cake. The technical writing in this book is thorough and this book has become a valuable resource in my library. Thanks Alison for this gem, you've exceeded my expectations and you have raised the bar for other Authors.
Rating: Summary: More Than a Book Review: Mastering Mircosoft Access 2000 Development is more than just a book, it is a valuable tool that every user of MS Access should have available to them. Alison Balter's book is the equivalent of a carpenter's hammer, it is that good. If you are building an application in Access, this is the best tool available for the job. This is also a tool that can be used effectively by both the novice and the experienced Access developer. The book effectively details the basics as well as advanced topics. The beginner is exposed to what Access is, its strengths and weaknesses. Advanced topics, such as Client/Server applications, are demystified. This books greatest strength is the way in which topics are discussed. The author gets right to the heart of the matter and does not bore, or confuse the reader with minute detail. It is a real How To book. My best tribute to this work is that after an hour of reading, I was able to deploy a very useful application to one of my users. This book is a great tool, get it, read it, keep it in your tool box.
Rating: Summary: Great Book By A Great Author Review: Ms Balter extends her string of books I am compelled to buy two copies of (one for my office and one to take home). Mastering Microsoft Access 2000 Development hits the Sweet Spot. It is easy to understand even when dealing with advanced topics. One of the best reference books on my shelves.
Rating: Summary: Lucid English and complete explanations--what a concept Review: Refreshing to finally see lucid English and complete explanations in technical writing. Ms. Balter deserves an award for this book. Thank you!
Rating: Summary: Clear, readable, and well targeted. Review: The main strength of this book is Balter's ability to explain both the specific technical details of Access as well as the more philosophical principles that underlie the design decisions you have to make when you build a database. It's a very long book, which is often a sign of poorly chosen or organized information, but she does a good job both of selecting what to talk about, and presenting it clearly. Although I wouldn't say I couldn't put it down (as another reviewer here did) I do agree that it's a very well written book that is about as easy to read as any technical book dealing with a complex subject. To put it another way, if all tech books were written this well, my life would be a lot easier.
Rating: Summary: This book has increased my job satisfaction !! (really) Review: This book has been invaluable to me. I designed a database for an employer several years ago that was very successful, but at that time I knew nothing of VBA and the real power of Access. Now I find myself again designing a much more complacted system for my current employer... except my old knowledge is not enough. I needed to know VBA and I also needed to be refreshed in my understanding of Access since I had forgotten much of it in the past few years. This book has saved my butt! THANKS ALISON! Not only does it provide a solid overview of the basics of Access, but it holds your hand as you take your first steps into the powerful (and suprisingly easy and fun) world of Visual Basic for Applications(VBA). Some people want to find some perfect book that will basically write their program for them by copying everything they see. This book does give lots of useful examples but won't go that far (no book does). But where this book may not show you exactly how to do something, it at least tells you what is possible... and from there I've been able to hit newsgroups or other How-To MSAccess sites that helped me flesh things out. This book helped my job satisfaction shoot way up! :) The system I've been working on has been daunting in its detail, but with this book at my side, I'm not afriad to take on any database design challenge the business throws at me including multi-user networked situations, advanced VBA methods among many many other subjects. And as a personal note to anyone curious about this book... I research all the books I buy through here(Amazon) too. I really want to know that I am buying THE book for my needs. This book has been a very pleasant suprise and will be on my desk for a long time. I rarely write reviews...I'm too busy. But this book deserves it!

Rating: Summary: not that good Review: This book has been my absolute bible well building a client server SQLServer2000/Access2000 application. The book touches upon virtually every topic you need to consider when building an application of this type. The only time I find myself going outside the book is when I need specific reference information on certain VB library functions, constants, etc. On the whole, still a must have for someone doing serious development in this genre.
