Summary: Factual and typographical errors
Review: After the third or fouth factual error (I teach Ethernet technologies) and the fifth or sixth typesetting error (missing or partial paragraphs) I finally tracked down the publishing house and told them of my disappointment. They sent out another book (without the typesetting errors), but it didn't set my mind at ease about the factual errors.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great overview with excellent detail where appropriate.
Review: As someone designing a network upgrade, this book provides the detail I need. In several sections, a flowchart provided clear direction on what decision might be best for me and why. The authors are biased towards Cisco products ("the 7500 series would work very well in this situation") and don't mention enough competitive products. In summary, this book is probably targeted to LANS with either < 40 users or > 200.

Summary: How do you know if THIS Ethernet book is the right one?
Review: Dear Ethernet book shopper:

So you are trying to decide which Ethernet book to buy. It's not an easy decision to make.

I am the co-author of 'Switched, Fast and Gigabit Ethernet' and want to tell you a bit more about our book.

There must be at least a dozen books out there on Ethernet or one of it's higher-speed variants. Yes, it's definitely a buyers market out there.

So what makes ours different? This is the 3rd edition of our book. We have improved our book with every new edition, taking readers comments and suggestions into consideration. The best compliment we got from a reader of our second edition, who sent us the following email: "thanks for a great book. bought yours friday afternoon. went to the beach on saturday. spent all day at the beach with my girlfriend. read your book cover to cover. btw, got badly sunburnt". I felt like sending an email back saying "get a life", but instead thanked the reader for his feedback and recommended suntan lotion for next time.

Unconfirmed sources tell us that our book is the best-selling book on Ethernet. We attribute this to the fact that our book starts with the basics, yet covers all the latest technologies. We focused on making the book hands-on, with real-world products, and deployment examples, how to use them in your network.

If you own our first or second edition this book is still worthwhile reading as we have rewritten most of the book. We also included 3 completely new chapters on Gigabit Ethernet, VLANs, and Layer 3 switching. Then there is a new foreword from John Chambers, CEO of Cisco, as well as a very interesting and somewhat controversial epilogue from Kevin Tolly, CEO of the Tolly Group.

I look forward to your comments on this edition.

Regards,

Robert Breyer

Summary: good reference
Review: Good technical reference for the working engineer, sales consultant or lecturing personel alike. To any serious sales consultant or corporate engineer involved in a medium to large network management or development, this book is a must. Breyer's authority in ethernet goes way back and includes his involvement at the development stage of intel's release of the market's first 10/100 autosensing nic. Summary: The Only Ethernet Book You Need on your Desktop....
Review: I used this book for my CCIE exam preparation. I have zillion other titles on Ethernet and switching. Excellent repeat Excellent Book. Not only is the book well presented but also well structured. I agree with the reader who said in his review, "if there is just one ethernet book u'll ever buy, make sure this IS it!"

Summary: A REFERENCE about NEW Ethernet technologies
Review: I was looking a book to know more about Fast Ethernet and Gigabit. I wanted clear explanations on technologies such as VLAN level 2 and 3 as well as reference materials about cabling and I got it all. Explanations are clear and the module very well organized. I'm giving courses with an Ethernet switches manufacturer and this book has helped me a lot. I do recommend it.

Summary: Outstanding organization
Review: I was really pleased with both the information containted in this book as well as the manner in which it was presented. This book's organization makes it great for a "cover-to-cover" read (on a VERY long weekend!) or for a quick reference check.

If I could only have one Ethernet book on my shelf, this would be it.
