Summary: Re: Very Nice SEO Book
Review: I am a Search Engine Consultant myself and I got to know about this book from the SEO Conference Handbook. It was nice to see this book recommended by them and I immediately got on the web, purchased it and soon after it was delivered to me, I read it all and I must say this is value for money for all those who want an insight into SEO.
Get this book and start reading and drop a thanks note to the author. Good work. You can reach me at http://www.nakulgoyal.com if you need any more info about me or about this book.

Summary: Experts pass your way, this book is for newbies
Review: I read this book over the weekend and my advice to you all SEOer, pass your way ... you won't learn anything new.

I'm sorry :) if I was not supposed to read this book, but this is clearly material aimed at beginners to website development and to search engine promotion.

Moreover the 5 chapters that compose this book (sold for 300 pages) span over 225 pages with a third-of-the-page right margin ... this book could be half its size. The rest is forewords, introduction, link list, glossary, index and a free chapter of another book "Speed up your web site" (nothing-new-here-also).

The five chapters are :

- Before you build (36 pages)
- How to build better web pages (72p)
- Page design workarounds (47p)
- After your site is built (47p)
- Best practices : the Dos and Don'ts of Search Engine Marketing (17p)

I only give two stars now because nowhere is this book clearly advertised as a book for beginners.

The back-cover tells : "This book teaches developers, designers, programmers, and online marketers what pitfalls to avoid from the beginning so they can provide their clients with more effective site designs" ... I find it hard to believe that we can still find developers and designers... that don't know those basic facts about website building.

But give me that book 5 years ago and I would have loved it :)

Summary: Doesn't talk about google - waste of money
Review: I run a web site that gets quite a bit of traffic (#270,000 in the world according to Alexa), and I know a little something about how google works. The problem with this book is that it doesn't talk about google. At all. A search engine visibility book that doesn't specifically get in depth on google. Look people, NO OTHER SEARCH ENGINE BESIDES GOOGLE MATTERS. OK? Thinking otherwise is "so 1997", :-) If you have a web site you know what I'm talking about. Look at your server logs. Plain as day. Google won. 87% of my search engine traffic comes from google. 11% more from Yahoo, using google's results. The numbers are real.

Anyway, why would you want a book with outdated information? For thirty bucks no less. Get something good like google hacks, and a copy of learning perl. Then you might really get somewhere. Google hacks has an AWESOME section on getting good search engine rankings. Best I've ever read in fact.

Summary: A MUST HAVE if you are thinking of creating a website.
Review: I urge you to get this book BEFORE you have your website built. I have a gift website and this book helped me tremendously. I only wish I had found it before designed my site. It's great for people that have an beginning to intermediate knowledge of web design. Very, very helpful.

Summary: Only The Basics?
Review: I was happy to discover that this book DOES NOT actually tell you how to make "Dynamic Web Pages" search engine friendly. It mentions about this in general but doesn't give you the code or script you need to make it happen. There is already too much competition for top page ranking so I was relieved to know the secret on how to do this wasn't totally revealed in this book. I don't think the information contained in this book is any better than what you can learn from search engine optimization tutorials or forums easily found on the Web.

Summary: Finally! An SEO Book That Doesn't Teach Tricks!
Review: Many people think that creating a Website that can be found in the search engines means you have to forfeit a great looking design. Others believe that search engine marketing is all about tricking the engines and fooling directory editors.

Shari Thurow's 'Search Engine Visibility' explains in clear, concise language why this just isn't so!

Today's Internet search engines and directories want to see the same thing as your site visitors -- a Website that clearly states what it has to offer. Shari's done a great job of putting her years of designing search engine friendly sites into words the average Webmaster will understand.

Search engine marketing takes one giant leap forward with this book that spells out exactly what you should do (as well as what you shouldn't do) to achieve long-term Website success.

Summary: I'm keeping this book with my old mags!
Review: Only half of the book talks about how to work with search engines. The rest of the book is filled with quick and dirty type of discussions about web usability -- you can get a better usability book than this.

If you are a technical person, forget about buying this book; you can find better information off the Web (or better still, you already know what she has to say!) If you are a non-technical person, I'd recommend you to do some research on the Web and spend your hard earned money somewhere else.

The book is now pilled up with my old magazines in my bathroom for occasional quick reading.

Summary: straight talk and great advice
Review: People ask me all the time about Search Engine optimization and marketing -- now I have this great book to recommend to them. I really like the helpful tone, the examples, the straightforward advice that will make good web sites. So many people hype their magic formula, which turns out to be search engine spam. Shari Thurow does a great job of showing how to make web sites that work well for both users and search engines. No nonsense, no search engine "spamming", just good information and useful techniques.

Summary: A Must-Read for Web Designers and Business Owners
Review: Shari Thurow offers practical tips for effective and "safe" search engine optimization. She reveals the design techniques that attract search engine spiders without compromising Web site aesthetics (yea!). She also provides examples and resources to help business owners create a search engine marketing strategy, and to help Web designers implement it.

I appreciated the detailed recommendations - such as the character length of meta data and how to use the "robots.txt" file. Thurow's design experience shines through her suggestions too; for example, what font/typeface and hyperlink colors best appeal to Web site customers.

Even if readers are looking to outsource their search engine optimization efforts, this book will educate them on the techniques that professional firms should use.
