Rating: Summary: Very good book Review: This book, and some help (t#e#s#t#k#i#n#g) helped me pass the A+ test by a mile. 831 on OS and 900 on Harware.
Rating: Summary: Good Test Guide Review: This test guide is easy reading without being too vague and general, includes good illustrations with overall thorough explanations. I will definitely use Meyer's books in the future.
Rating: Summary: Passed both exams...900 on Hardware Core Review: What a great and clear explainations Michael gives in his book. This was the first McGraw book I purchased, but it was by far worth the experience. I felt extreamely confident on what would be on the test by using the enclosed CD-ROM. When I sat down for the test, I was not concerned...not that the test is that difficult. I referenced several direct quotes from his book on the test, which not only meant that the book was useful, but I actually learned the topics that I wasn't as comfortable with. It took me 20 minutes to take the Hardware Core and like I stated I got 900. The sidebar to this was that his OS section was a little weak. I don't have much experience with NT 4.0 or with Netware so I felt like I needed more information for those. Hopefully his next version will improve on that, but it was well worth the cost of the book.
Rating: Summary: The book is bloated, but the Practice tests are perfect! Review: The book itself contains way too much information for anyone to ever or even needs to retain. However, the CD that come with the book is perfect. It comes with 3 practice tests for each of the two tests in the A+ exam, and presents an Adaptive test for each exam as well. The Adaptive tests included on the CD are EXACTLY like the ones that you will take for the real thing. The test included on this CD helped more than anything else than I used. You are also given the option to spend hundreds of more dollars for additional testing material, but there is no need for that unless you are a complete beginner. I passed both tests with no problem at all.
Rating: Summary: It helped me pass the A+ Exam Review: I thought the book was excellent. It's true that it isn't as narrowly focused on the exam as some may like because the author goes into depth about the history and logic behind why things are they way they are. I learn better conceptually, rather than by rote, so this was the A+ book for me. The CD-ROM is mostly useless in my opinion except for the practice test which, after taking the test, were pretty much right on. I read the whole book, cover to cover, then re-read exam-focused parts and I passed both on my first try. (Beware, the OS part is definitely harder. You'll want some Win 98 and Win 2000 hands-on if at all possible.) Overall, an excellent book for those willing to put the time it. Also, it was well written and had a good flow for a technical book. Most technical books butcher English in my opinion. Though I wish the pictures were in color or at least a little clearer for the hardware section.
Rating: Summary: Passed the A+ with flying colors Review: Michael Meyers does a great job of explaining the inner-workings of a PC to the novice user. And at the end of the book, that user will have enough knowledge to pass the A+ exam. The testing simulation is quite good. I even think I saw a few of the questions on the actual exam. If you are wanting A+ certification, buy this book. Nothing really seemed to be overkill or lacking when it came to the exams. I also highly recommend his Network+ book. I passed that exam with a score of 840/900.
Rating: Summary: great book Review: This is an excellent guide. Highly recommended. Not only is it a great read, but its a great reference to keep around after you take the test.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: I bought this book without having any clue about computers or computer repair. Today, I am A+ certified. This book gave me everything I needed to become certified. It feels good when the people I used to ask for help now come to me! Do yourself a favor and buy this book. Awesome job Mike!
Rating: Summary: 5th Edition Due Out... Review: Just FYI, I haven't gotten this book yet because I was trying to decide whether to wait for the 5th edition or not (ISBN: 0072229918). I called McGraw-Hill today and they said the 5th edition is due out at the end of October 2003! There is plenty to study in the meantime so I'm going to go ahead and get the 4th!
Rating: Summary: Great book for A+ Test and for general info....... Review: This book really did it for me. Mike Meyers did an excellent job of explaining things I was already familiar with and things I was not familiar with. Whether you are a tech that has already been in the field or just someone wanting to know how a computer works and how to upgrade, get this book. The practice tests are also great. You can answer from over 600 different questions in the practice or final mode. The simulated adaptive test is identical to the real A+ test. I did pass my A+ Hardware and OS Test, but be warned. The hardware test was really easy and followed the book and pratice test well. The OS test was more difficult and either the questions were reworded or they were totally different, the OS test did not seem to follow the information in the book or pratice tests. My advice would be to study the hardware chapters well and to study the OS chapters well and to make sure you have experience or are an avid Windows and DOS user. A person with experience in Hardware and Windows/DOS will be sure to pass both parts with no problem. Thanks Mike for writing a great book, just brush up on the OS chapters and practice tests questions.
