Summary: Excellent practical knowledge
Review: This book is filled with lots of great practical examples on which to build. Kevin Yank provides just enough technical background to let you see how PHP and MySQL can be used for more complex applications without slowing you down. If you've been wanting to move on from plain ol' HTML pages, this is the book for you.

Summary: This Tutorial WORKS
Review: This book is the first tutorial that actually GOT me there. I was able to set up my G3 266 running OS X (that's right kids, 10.2.8) and get Apache set up right, MySQL installed, tested and working securely and PHP connected up. When I got my first test page working and pulled my first record up, I came to the realization that the instructions in the book worked. Exactly right. First time. Well-written, well-formatted and CLEAR. The Mac section had everything I needed. When I began doing the exercises, I began to dread typing in all the code - then I finally keyed on the CODE ARCHIVE!!!! No CDs to screw around with - just go to the site, punch in some numbers and BINGO, complete set of files, ready to use. Gotta love that. I'm confident now, having finally gotten over the 'hump' of setting up my system and UNDERSTANDING what I was doing, that I'll be able to build database-driven sites with good insight.

I strongly recommend this title.

Summary: Awesome guide.
Review: This book rocks. I have two books on php and mysql. This one stands out really well in my mind. I use it all the time as a reference for mysql statements.

Also check out sitepoint.com, for more resources on this book.

Summary: Train gives it 5 stars...
Review: This book was great!!! I have struggled for a while now to find a PHP book with such easy understanding of what you are actually doing. I bought the book and went to the authors website to download the small amount of error that have been corrected and went on my way. One of the great things about this book is that there code sniplets are right. In many books I have read about PHP code sniplets have had errors and wouldn't run. This book also provides great information about MySQL. From backups to access, it is presented with great knowledge. I highly recommend this book also to anyone who wants to understand Content Management. It is has two great changes on CMS.

Summary: Pretty Basic - Good for Beginners
Review: This is not a work for the more advanced developer. It's basic. The one good think I found was that the explanation on how to install PHP with IIS is the best explanation I've seen in a book. I am not unhappy for buying the book but ...

Summary: I yearned for more...
Review: This was the first book I bought on PHP and MySQL. Maybe that was my first mistake, but as a newbie I guess I didn't know what to look for. I had read reviews raving about this book, and I like the SitePoint website, so I really expected a lot out of 'Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL'.

What I got was a lot of disappointment. As another reviewer discussed, the book is slim, has no index and is more like a tutorial than a reference book.

I found if I wanted to deviate from examples in the book, I was lost. Wanting to reread any part of the book proves difficult because, as said before, there is no index.

The only thing the book did do was pique my interest in PHP and MySQL even more. I went on to purchasing several other books on these subjects that helped make things click.

The book is now on my top shelf along with other books I rarely, if ever, refer to.

If you have little or no programming experience and are a complete newbie to PHP than this is not the book for you.

Summary: Lightweight
Review: To my absolute amazement, this is a $... book with no rendered HTML anywhere in it...

It's thin, goes into way too much depth on installation issues and almost no depth into the core stuff.

Lower the price, show us the rendered HTML, and then it may turn out to be a good book. In the meantime, this is the first and last time I trust a review on slashdot....
