Summary: Excellent book!
Review: If you want to learn C# painlessly, read this book. After reading tis book, I not only could write C# programs, but understood the .Net framework better.

This book is packed with solid information on the C# language and the .Net framework, but the Author's writing style is so easy-going, it wasn't difficult for my brain to absorb.

The Author explains all aspects of the C# language clearly and precisely, and give lots of good real world examples that can be used for future reference. Once you finish this book, you will have a solid foundation for your .Net future!!.

Summary: Do you like Academic books?
Review: Let me put it that way, The book is 100% Academic and I'm one of the guys that like to read a book that makes me feel that the writer is talking to me not talking in a session. I gave it 3 because the content is not perfect as you may think, the authors have left many subjects out of the discussion although very important. Yes the book is 1000+ but it's just pages and pages of redundant code, You can say it's just 600 pages book because it doesn't make any sense to spend 100 pages in loops, does it?

Summary: Excellent
Review: Not another book from the Deitels. Just when I thought I can sit back and relax after their assaults on C, C++, Java, VB etc., here comes another book from the Deitel stable.

Not much else to say about this book other than that it teaches you C# like nothing else can...

All C# topics are covered in a wonderfully accessible manner. Thoroughly well written. Impressive style. Great read.

Summary: Another great book from the Deitel team
Review: Superb. This book shows how it should be done. It covers just about everthing you need to know about C# - web services, XML, database access - it's all here in one book.

The many examples illustrate the concepts very well, and I particularly like the useful tips, 'common programming errors' and 'good programming practice' advice.

Surprisingly, the material is also accessible to people new to programming. There's sufficient introductory material (which experienced programmers can skip over) to allow program novices to start programming with C# - no need to start with Basic in a DOS window!

I have a few other books on C#, but this is easily the best.

Summary: Good Book -- GREAT Company
Review: The 5-star review is more for the Deitel publishing company than the book itself. That being said, I have been programming in C# for several weeks now, building complex custom applications, and I have yet to find a situation that the book did not either solve completely or get me started. It is an indespensable resource for learning and using C#.

But the true reason why anyone should buy this book (or any other Deitel book) is the level of service. Many people complain that Deitel books are expensive, and they are. They very often contain the same information as other books, so why would you pay more? Here is why...

After using their book for a while, I opened the companion CD to get some information from one of the Appendices that is not in the printed book, but only available on the CD. My CD was damaged and unusable. I sent an e-mail to Deitel's "catch-all" e-mail address (deitel@deitel.com), explaining my predicament. I was only half expecting to hear back from them, much less get a satisfactory resolution to my issue. Instead, I was contacted within the hour, just to let me know that they were handling my request, and I received another e-mail the next morning, letting me know that a replacement CD was already in the mail.

Finally, someone that appears to care about the consumers of their books past their checkbook.

I will be buying more Deitel books in the future.

Summary: Great Book to learn C# and .NET
Review: The best part about this book and the author's other book Visual Basic .NET How to Program, is that the index is similar. (This is true for most of their books.). What this means is that you can learn VB & C# in parallel.

Their handling of the material is just great. The author explains the concepts in such a clear manner.

There are many tips on Software Engineering, performance, etc.

These books will not only teach you .NET, you will learn How to Program in these languages, learn software engineering principles.

The money spent on these books is really worth it.

Summary: The book has its pluses but then comes the minuses
Review: The book started out nicely, explaining things step-by-step. Then around chapter 6 it starts throwing out pages of code with little explanation. I had liked the way it referenced visual studio to the code. Around chapter 6 it references visual studio sparingly and I found it hard to create the programs using visual studio cause they left out steps. The book has lots of good tips on commenting code, I felt they should apply it to commenting the text material better.

Summary: A good foundation to start on
Review: The book takes an excellent approach in the early parts by introducing the reader to GUI'ed apps. In my opinion, this is what's very important. Writing Console applications is not as important as writing an application using Winforms, and the book encourages it early on. The book is *heavy*, and it has plenty of exercises after each chapter - though not as challenging (seasoned C.S. student), it's a good practice, and they require that the reader write the solution using GUI. It's a good book, it takes "No Knowledge" approach, so don't be surprised when it covers topics you already know.

Summary: Confusing and just pages of unexplain code.
Review: The Deitel's write a lot of books, but it looks like
they copied a lot from their C++ book.

The books starts off good, but quickly becomes confussing.

Summary: Excellen Book for the Serious Professional
Review: There is nothing superficial about C# - How to Program. This book is a rigorous and thorough treatment of the C# language from ground zero to proficiency, should you decide to read the entire 1250 pages, and program the practice exercises. This book is very well written, and could easily be used for a college-level course in computer science. As a self-study guide, you cannot help but to learn the C# language, as well as adopt good programming and software engineering techniques. The presentation of each software snippet follows a rigorous software engineering discipline that build good technique that can only help you in a code walkthrough and in debugging your own software. If you stick with the book, and use C#.Net (for an additional $100 - street price) you can learn the basics of C# and probably do 98% of the things you would need to do with the language.
If you read the other reviews, you can see that they run hot and cold. It seems to me that the reviews with the most stars are from people who want a thorough knowledge of C#, and the ones with fewer stars are from people who have treated the book superficially, or wanted a "quick fix" to the difficult issue of learning a programming language. If you want to KNOW C#, buy this book and STUDY it. If you want to just be familiar with C#, try something else.
I found this book is very well written, and I highly recommend it! It is better than the books I have seen from MS Press, and others.
