Rating: Summary: Poor Book Review: I have been teaching both c++ and visual basic for the past several years. I attempted to use the Deitel book to grasp c# and found it very hard to follow. It seems they attmpted to write a book that pleases both newbies and seasoned programmers alike, in my opinion it does niether very well.
Rating: Summary: Mainstay Review: I have been USING "C# How to Program" for about 7 months. It is comprehensive and relevant to the TASKS at hand. I have a library of C# books and "C# How to Program" has become my mainstay. It should be your first C# book. The reason I didn't give it five stars was not because of content, that is five star, but because of the sheen of the paper. I use this book so much that my eyes feel like their on fire. My problem I know, but it would very helpful if there was some way to keep the page count with a matt finish. I noted that some reviews said this was not a good first read. I don't agree. But I do suggest that this is a book you have to work with. No pain no gain. You spend the time with this book and you will reap the rewards.
Rating: Summary: Too much garbage Review: I have C++ How to Program, first 6 chapter I guess two books are very identical. For introduction to OOP, maybe author should write a new book, like OOP How to Program, but not for all How to Program book. Lot of example are very identical, i guess they just convert C++ or whatever to C# How to Program
Rating: Summary: You need this book Review: I have purchased a lot of programming books and even a computer based training package in the last few years. None of them covered the concepts of programming as well as this book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a novice programmer who wants to learn C# as well as a good foundation of programming skills.
Rating: Summary: Best beginner book I've seen. Review: I have read a few reviewers say that this book is "not for beginners" or "hard to follow" or that it "doesn't give us any practice". Nothing could be less accurate. Are they reading the same book? I started reading the "in 24 Hours" book and the "in 21 Days" book. I got through the first few chapters of each and felt like I was spending a lot of my time trying to go back through the chapters and figure out what the authors were trying to teach. No such problem with this book. I'm half way through the book, and have a MUCH more thorough understanding of C#. I wouldn't call myself a programmer by any stretch just yet, but I know I'm getting a solid base to work from and know that I can write working C# code. If you have ever taken classes in anything and can read, this book will teach you C#. Thank you Deitels!

Rating: Summary: Nice and easy Review: I recieved this book free at a msdnaa event, and i thought it was pretty good, would be ideal for intermediate level programmers or as a textbook to a beginner's programming course
Rating: Summary: Ugh - Tries to Do Too Much and Delivers Not Enough Review: I'm a seasoned programmer taking a class in C# for an advanced degree. This book is actually the text for the class - and I'm having the hardest time following it. The authors try to present a great deal of information, but they end up glossing over things and not really giving the reader in-depth information. In the end, this book confuses more than it helps.
Rating: Summary: Now I know how Review: I'm a VB programmer who never did anything serious with C++ or Java, and I thought that it would be nice to start using something else besides VB, so I bought this book. Now I can write full, complex windows applications without any problems, thanks to this book. From the first page to the last all the expalnations are clear enough, the examples show how things are done, even of the more advanced topics, of course if you want to be an expert in XML, ADO .Net, and ASP .Net, you will need to get more books on those subjects, but this one will give you the basics to tackle the more advanced stuff. I really don't know if more experienced C++ or Java developers would benefit from this book, but for me it was the best book I've purchased so far.
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly thorough and utterly boring Review: If you are looking for a book that thoroughly and systematically explains the details of the language, then this book might be for you. The problem I had with it was jumping from what the book talks about to actually make a program. The book spends pages and pages about the most subtle details of the language, but very little about how to actually do anything interesting or complicated with it. I'll give it a 5 for theory and a 1 for practicality.
