Summary: A waste of $! Avoid!
Review: What a cheaply written book! Filled with an overwhelming amount of detail, unfortunately the majority of it is no different to what can be found in the VB help screens. The authors add very little by way of their own input and where they do, it is needlessly wordy, frequently repeated and generally adds little. The programming examples are limited, poorly explained and little use to anyone seeking to learn complex VB for business use. Programming exercises seem poorly thought out and rarely draw out well the features discussed in the preceeding chapter. Its cheap two colour printing and irritating bug logos throughout only serve to add insult to injury...

Summary: One of the finest VB beginner books
Review: This book is one of the finest and the most comprehensive VB beginner books that I have read. The book covers all aspects of Visual Basic 6 in a clear and concise manner. I wasted no time adding it to my list of favorite beginner books on my "Visual Basic Book Reviews" web site.

Summary: Comprehensive and clear introduction to VB6.
Review: All the code on the CD ran. The files from the website downloaded perfectly. Many, many code examples with great explanations. A wide variety of exercises at the end of each chapter. Very readable with straightforward explanations of the concepts. I read it cover-to-cover and felt I should send the Deitels more money.

Summary: In general, this is a good book...
Review: it explains the VB programming concepts in detail. However, it does not address many controls, and there is virtually no coverage on control arrays and collections although it mentions a little bit. There is an error in the very first paragraph on page 488: "Width...End Width" should be "With...End With". I hoope this is just a typing error. If you are a beginner especially if you are new to programming, this is not a book for you unless you have an instructor. But if you are an experienced windows programmer in any programming language, you should have no problem to read and understand this book.

I have read several of Deitels' books, and most of them are in text book style. They are all good but not for beginners without instructors.

Summary: Good book - but reading it is an exercise in debugging
Review: Just reading this book is an exercise in debugging! Incorrect answers to exercises, text out of place, etc. However, I like Deitel & Deitel. If you are a beginner D&D are some of the best books out their to learn programming from. Their books give thorough explanations. They are not designed to be read in 21 days! These are books for people who learn from books. I skipped the section that contained trigonometry though - more complexity than I need.

Summary: Excellent self-learning text.
Review: A highly recommended introductory text that covers the true basics of VB programming. There are no useless exercises which consist of only a sequence of instructions telling you where to place the mouse pointer. The discussion dealing with control structures is particularly good. Unfortunately, the text seems to be plagued by very numerous typographical errors. Hopefully, a second printing will take care of this.

Summary: Excellent Book
Review: I started learning Visual Basic by studying the Sams series of books to learn Visual basic in 21days and though that gave me a rough idea , this book clearly outshines any book by starting from the basics and then moving to the advanced topics.I have read the other books by Dietel & Dietel namely the C++ and java and this book continues the excellent standard that they have maintained.

Summary: An Excellent book in learning Visual Basic 6
Review: This is one of the best computer programming book I read. It really taught Beginners how to program because it gives explanation on every example.

The example programs are very good. Though I spot some minor errors, this really helps you to check out the solutions and not just type and execute.

What most valuable is that the CD includes Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 working model edition which allows you to start learning Visual Baisc instantly. Why spend $200 to take an introductory class when you can learn more by paying just $50. Next time I would certainly check out other "How to Program" book by Deitel & Deitel.

Summary: I like it, I like it.
Review: A well thought out, well put together book. Clearly explains both actual code and underlying concepts. Properly targeted to students of VB by authors who obviously have teaching/authoring experience. I bought the book and am happy.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great book, highly recommended teachers
Review: This book is absolutely superb. It's understandable for beginners and it's very thorough. I love all the exercises and examples that are even useful instead of generic like other books. In college, most professors highly recommend or use Deitel/Deitel books as texts when teaching any computer language that there is a Deitel/Deitel book on the subject.
