Summary: An updated classic
Review: Margulis is a highly respected professional who transcends the usual oversimplified chapters on color correction by writing an entire book on the topic. With a background in CMYK press work, his emphasis is on press color preparation which may seem a bit off track to RGB inkjet jockeys, but he has balanced his techniques to include all three color spaces Photoshop offers, CMYK, RGB and LAB, giving examples of the strengths and weaknesses of each. This is a book that will be re-read and retained for reference, and despite some curiously negative reviews, I found the book extremely helpful and quite well balanced. This is not a beginner's tutorial, but a professional's proven methods of color control within the Photoshop environment using all the tools available. I own 7 books on Photoshop 7 and this is the most indispensible. The book includes a CD with sample images for user experimentation.

Summary: WOW!!!!!
Review: outstanding!!!!! dan once again proves he is the man!!!! after reading professional photoshop 6,i couldn't wait to get ths one!!!! as an old school stripper who morphed into a scanner opperator, honed my craft for many years on a hell 399 drum scanner and have run a scitex eversmart pro for the last 5 years,i learned something VITAL every few pages at least!!!!. dan's tireless work and reasearch has paid off 10 fold.his by the numbers approach is dead on. the chapter on curves is priceless for bringing out detail and vastly improving the look of any image, reguardless of the destination.the plate blending he demonstrates is mind bending, who the heck thought you could blend the green channel into the rgb composite to improve fleshtones??? if anyone knew you could do that sure as heck kept to themselves. the chapters "all color spaces are one" and "every file has ten channels" put to rest the absurb argument that you will kill an image switching color spaces ,he proves all color spaces are one. i dont even know where to start with the sharpening,i thought using a 500% amount on usm in photoshop could never, ever has a use, some photoshop "pro's" have a fit if anything over 200% is used they are knaves to say it kindly as far as the sharpining issue. i now know real men use 500 when ever possible, and dont even bat an eye doing so.he also puts to bed that silly 8bit vs. 16 bit in offset printing. it goes on and on with info that will improve your images if you are willing to learn. dan's writing style to me is dead on,it is the only way it can be taught raw and to the point . bring on that sharpinig book,or the lab color book dan, i will be awating to find out how much i dont know. thanx for all you do to improve our industry it is an honor to read and learn from a true master, there arent many left. jim donovan

Summary: One Star Rating is just about enough
Review: PRO: Author provides some useful information on assessing each image and its problems. Also gives some good info how brain works against the color.

CON: Let me put it simple. While author is a photoshop "legend" member of Adobe "Hall of Fame", etc... he focuses on some rather old techniques. Dan pushes user into editing in CMYK only, while he disregards advantages of 16bit over 8bit, and is totally against profiling CMYK output devices.

In my opinion this is an approach of the man that is rather old and rather old people tend to reject the 'new stuff'. His arguments against newer techniques (RGB editing, 16 bit editing and complete color managed workflow till the very end) are rather poor.

Beware: If you are new to image preparation for press, this book can misslead you. If you take it as your basic knowledge source, it will hit you back in the head like a boomerang once you see how this book limits you and your workflow.

Bottom line: Buy this book only if you understand all about image correction and you want to see some other (dinosaur) appraches.

Summary: "The Book". "The Man". "The Photoshop Hall of Famer"
Review: Professional Photoshop is the revised editon of the latest techniques on color correction by this "Photoshop Hall of Famer". He goes where no "others" have gone before. His latest techniques in color corection. Using the "overlay blend","the false profile". Trouble finding neutrals in your images? Chapter 6(new), "Inferences,Illusions, and When to Bet the Image" will help you with that. This Chapter even gives you a color recipe page.. Some say, images should only be in 16 bit mode if your serious about editing your images. Well, let me tell you. Chapter 15 proves the evidence. Not only does this "Photoshop Hall of Famer" shows you. But he shows("shows". The key word here.) the original images on the CD(just apply the curves he has on the CD for them or apply your own). There are more images to work on than the last version. Some are new ones, easy and tough ones. As always, curves is the tool for high end color correction. As well as his know how. If you want the best in color correction for images. Be born again. This is "the book" for color correction. Amen.

Summary: Learn from a Master
Review: Quite simply, this book has revolutionized my understanding of color, and my ability to make color corrections for publication. My background includes absolutely no color theory, so I had been floundering in a wide gamut quagmire. Dan's succinct instructions, excellent examples, and wry commentary make for both an enjoyable and instructive read. He may not satisfy the theorists or calibrationists with his beliefs on the value of device profiling, but if you want a book that presents a practical approach to color correction, and provides plenty of reinforcement, this is one to put high on your list. The included CD is very helpful.

Thinking is a must if you wanna be a pro...

Summary: Best book on Color Correction on the market
Review: This book hasthe most in-depth and real-world explanations and guides to getting the most from a color image, bar none. It's not always the easiest to follow, as it expects the user to have a basic familiarity with the product, and some of the concepts are difficult to grasp, but no other book I've seen (I own over 50 Photoshop books, and have read at least another 100) gives as thorough a foundation to permit correcting colors and salvaging faded images.

It is NOT a general-purpose guide to Photoshop: it concentrates solely on color and tonal correction and enhancement. To my mind, that is a benefit, but if you're looking for a general Photoshop handbook, this is not the one to use.

For photographers, pre-press operators and such, this is THE book to master.

Summary: The last part of the title says it all...
Review: This book is, in a word, awesome.

This is not a Photoshop book. I suspect that the word "Photoshop" is in the title to sell books, because the techniques described will work with any image editing program.

This is a book about color correction, so if you want to learn how to make images look better, this is the book for you. I have read quite a few Photoshop books but this is the only one I ever recommend, even though the techniques can get a little advanced.

The author has a tendency to be wordy, but writes very well and keeps the material entertaining. Most technical books will put me to sleep within 4 pages, but this one is an easy read.

I can't understand why someone would rate this with only 1 star, but they may have been looking for a book on Photoshop Filters, or special type effects. This ain't it. It's just an easy read about the fundamentals of color correction.
