Rating: Summary: Good to learn designing concept Review: It's more on the designing side than on the technical side
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: It made several points impactfully and was fun to read. It assumes you know little about the Web, so it should be the non-designer's, non webmaster's book. Give you the basics without feeling condescending. I'd love for them to extend the book more to cover the things possible with dynamic html, etc.
Rating: Summary: The BEST book of its type in print. Review: This is a superb book. Because the focuss is on design principles, rather than a particular software package or computer platform (Mac vs PC), it is destined to become a timeless classic. The pricing is also extremely reasonable.Ideal for new designers, I can't help but think that perhaps a few of the so-called "web-design experts" could learn a thing or two form it. Buy it first, before you even consider another book.
Rating: Summary: thumbs up for "The Non-Designer's Web Book" Review: From an aspiring web designer - Thank You, Robin and John for not intimidating me from the gitgo! Discovered this book in my local public library, and unlike most computer books, I just had to own it. It is timeless, succinct, thoroughly informative, and a pleasure to read, a feat for any computer book to achieve.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding! You NEED this book. Review: This is a great book. It should be the first book read by any web page creator, and it should be re-read often. In addition to explaining what to do, the author explains what NOT to do, and why. If you read this book, your web pages will be richer, more functional, and much, much easier for your readers to look at and read.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous. Thank you, Robin! Review: This book shows you what to do--and what not to do and tells how and why. Sounds simple. Unfortunately, designing a cool website is NOT easy. Its a complex task but this book will get you there. Very satisfying to read something this thorough. Beautifully illustrated, too.
Rating: Summary: Instructive, reassuring, and great fun Review: Most web site designers take one of two opposite approaches: (1) overwhelm the user with gobs of information (and, sometimes, try to compensate for the resultant dullness by throwing in pointless animations, clashing colors, etc.), or (2) offer visual candy, but under all the spiffy PhotoShop graphics and Java special effects there's no useful content. Ms. Williams starts with the most basic considerations: What is it that you want your site to SAY about you or your business? Given that, what's the most effective way to say it? Not only is the book full of useful information, clearly presented, about site navigation and design, but it's visually appealing and a pleasure to read -- just like a good web site! And, while you're having fun, you're also painlessly learning a surprising amount. The book is rather thin on technical details, but I think this is a point in its favor: too much specific information renders a computer book obsolete almost as soon as the ink is dry; however, the design principles Williams sets out are timeless. I also liked her reassurance that you don't have to be a technical expert to design an effective web site: good thinking and planning are the only "secret." This is far and away the best book I've seen on the subject, and I recommend it highly.
Rating: Summary: If I could keep only ONE web design book...THIS would be it! Review: No matter what software you use... No matter what computer platform you use... No matter what your level of web design experience... ...you will NOT regret buying this book! I have quite a library of web design related books. I just recently decided to add this title. WOW! This author demonstrates what Visual Communication & Design means for effective web communication. This text would be the best possible that I could recommend for anyone just starting AND I know of few experienced designers who couldn't learn some invaluable lessons from this text. Good use of visual examples to illustrate her points (both good and bad). Buy it now...thank me later.
Rating: Summary: An OUTSTANDING reference for beginners Review: "The Non-Designers Web Book" is simply and artfully written for the novice design enthusiast. As a beginner myself, I shopped around through many other much more technical books and found this the most comprehensive, informative, educational and colorfully presented book of its type. A "must have" if you're contemplating web-design and want to do it right.
Rating: Summary: The simplest and the greatest web design book I've ever read Review: This book is a gold mine of information. It is well structured and seems to have all the answers that one can ever ask. In the jungle of information disinformation, no beginner or non-technical person who is interested in web design can afford to be without it.
