Summary: Lots of exclusive topics and of REAL WORLD hands on examples
Review: I'm not sure what one or another of those reviewers is smoking, but first of all nonew of those things you pointed out are typos. They made sense to me! That part on 146 was unclear, but it was a minor thing and easily remedied if you simply look in FileMaker's built in help. Why nitpick.

POTENTIAL BUYERS TAKE NOTE: This book is filled with TONS of hands on, real world examples and techniques on all topics. Keep in mind that the follwoing topics are covered in NO OTHER FILEMAKER BOOK:

Applescript, ActiveX, lots of great portal tricks, FMP and MySQL, integrating FMP with faxing, emailing, bar code scanning, Citrix, multi user design, cross-platform design, development standards, building a complete, government-compliant security system, using FileMaker on hand held devices in the real business world, using ten different plugins and details on BUILDING YOUR OWN plugin...need I go on? The book has a Web site (look on google) where you'll find the complete, detailed table of contents ti get the whole skinny on the book.

Don't believe those bad reviews. They were clearly looking at a different book or reading when they should have been sleeping.

Summary: Covers all the bases
Review: I've been a FileMaker developer for years, but until this book I never found a really good grimoire for FileMaker development, especially one that address all the permutations within the FileMaker product line.

Looking forward to a FileMaker 7 version.

Summary: An Excellent Resource!
Review: I've been an advocate of FileMaker since version 2.1 back in 1994. I've read the books, watched the videos, and practiced to create better databases. The Book of FileMaker 6 is probably the most complete reference I've read to date. The chapters are arranged in progression starting at the very beginning with "What is a database?". Don't let that fool you into thinking this is a beginner's tome. The latter chapters will test your true knowledge of FileMaker. If you are an experienced user feel free to skip over the early part of the book. But I wouldn't, as it is chocked full of tidbits and quips that correct any misconceptions or misinformation you may have acquired previously. I like the fact that the FileMaker application and The Book of FileMaker 6 covers both platforms. I'm a Mac user, but have to create databases that run seamlessly on Windows.
Through the course of The Book of FileMaker 6, and its accompaning CD, you are guided through creating a sample business database. Step-by-step instructions for the novice explain the basics of field definitions, setup, layout, creating records, entering data, and creating and printing reports. As you progress the chapters get more involved and demonstrate the powerful relationships created with FileMaker and how you can use that to your advantage. Jump in where you feel comfortable, you can't help but better your FileMaker skills. The CD contains hundreds of royalty free examples and tutorials that follow the book. The author encourages you to use them, change them, make money off of the them. He wants you to suceed!. The CD is organized so that each chapter of the book has a matching folder of additional information on the CD. You can read, learn and follow along at the same time. The book finishes with chapters on using FileMaker on the Internet with FileMaker Server, going portable with FileMaker Mobile and incorporating FileMaker with other external software.
I was particularly interested in the chapters on using FileMaker Server and learning more about how to use XML, ActiveX and AppleScript. The Book goes a long way toward aiding that understanding. Now I have to put to use what I've learned.
The authors writing style is comfortable in that you can grasp the meaning of the ideas without feeling like you are buried reading an instruction manual.

Summary: One Stop Shop
Review: I've found your Book of Filemaker 6 an absolute gem in it's overall coverage of the Filemaker family. It's like having all of the Filemaker suite of products in front of you without having to spend a penny. Quite simply that means you will save hundreds of pounds by not buying the wrong product.

As someone with over 7 years experience of previous Filemaker versions the tips and tricks I learned about version 6 have saved me tens if not hundreds of hours.

Combined with an easy to read style and great organisation this book is a fantastic reference book I use again and again. One of the best value for money computer books I've ever bought.

Summary: Loving The Book of FileMaker
Review: If I wasn't already married I would propose to Chris Kubica. Wow! What a book. I have it literally by the side of my bed at night.

I do Filemaker Pro Development for a living and I was actually looking for a book that covered FileMaker Mobile and Unlimited. This was the only book I found that covered both. So I grumbled about the cost and bought the book. Boy, am I ever glad that I shelled out the 59 bucks for this book.

This book has saved me so much time & money with it's many real life examples that come on the CD in the back of the book.

I am eagerly waiting for Chris Kubica to update this book up to Filemaker version 7. And when he does I will happily shell out 59 bucks again.

Thanks Chris!
-Sherry

Summary: EXCELLENT SOURCE
Review: If it was possible I would rate this book ten stars. It is an excellent source for filemaker. I'm a developer (I thought I was 'till I read the book') but after reading his masterpiece I realized that many things were missing in my knowledge. I red many books about filemaker all was just a reference they couldnt reach (not even close) the deep that Kubica did. No matter what degree of knowledge you have about FileMaker you will find useful, clean and smart solutions for your problems and you will also find almost all resources and references about FileMaker.

Congratulations and thanks for your hardworking Mr.Kubica

Summary: The Zen and Art of FileMake 6
Review: If you are expecting a step-by-step tutorial on building databases with FileMaker, this is not the book for you. Although the author appears to cover every possible subject regarding database development he spends very little time demonstrating to the reader how to build practical database solutions. The examples are difficult to read and even harder to implement. The author often points the reader to pre-built databases on the included CD. Although these examples are nice have it would be better if the author taught the reader how to build such databases. I have also found that it is very inconvenient to convert FileMaker 5 & 6 files to FileMaker 7. I would re-title this book as "The Zen and Art of FileMaker 6" and it should be placed in the philosophy section of your local library. This book is far from a "One-Stop Guide".

Summary: Good intermediate source and great templates
Review: One of the first thing I noticed about this book (which I just heard about from a freind at DevCon 2003) is that it has many wonderful templates on the CD that comes with it. One of the biggest things I'm always finding myself searching for on the google is for "free filemaker templates" and though these aren't exactly free you get quite a lot of them for your small amount of money spent on the book.

Another thing is that this book deleted the big mystery I've had about relational database design...before I did not know realy what that was all about until now.

I recommend this book not only to beginners (lots of great stuff) but for intermediate FMP folks like me getting started with advanced stuff as well. And for real gurus, there's stuff on building plug ins, using SQL and ODBC and using AppleScript.

And the section on planning database systems and linking em up to external applications in coolio.

So GO BUY YOURSELF ONE!!!! :):):):)

Summary: Perfect experience on reading book of FileMaker 6
Review: The Book of FileMaker 6 is the first book that I have asked friend to buy and Fedex for me. It's an excellent text book that I've ever had to lead me through my simple database development. Although English is not my native language, I found that the book is written in a very simple way and easily for understanding.
Another wonderful thing is that the book is covered entire feild on FileMaker 6. For example, the FileMaker Developer, FileMaker Server, FileMaker Mobile and FileMaker Pro etc. You'll find it very useful once you have it. I do looking forward to see the book of FileMaker 7 thatis going to be written by Chirs Kubica.

Summary: a veteran prof. FileMaker Developer
Review: The Book of FileMaker 6: Your One-Stop Guide to FileMaker Pro, Pro Unlimited, Developer, Server, and Mobile by Chris Kubica does go beyond the user manual included with the FileMaker Pro application in many respects (the templates and files on the CD-ROM are OK) but it still spends a great deal of time talking about the basic capabilities and features of the FileMaker Pro application itself instead of what you can build with the FileMaker application in the real world. This type of basic instruction, while important to beginners, is a waste of paper for intermediate to advanced developers which is its target audience. ' Sorry, I *LOVE* FileMaker, but this is yet another example of a FileMaker book written by a developer with little experience outside of the FileMaker 'box.' This is *NOT* the complete reference you've been looking for.
