Rating: Summary: Windows XP- The Missing Manual Review: This book is like the old days when a complete and comprehelsive instruction manual was included with a product. This book is so well organized, an amatuer can become an expert, an expert a better expert. The Table of Contents, Figures and Index are so professionally designed. I have contacted Michael Dell suggesting that this book should be included with every new Dell using WinXP. My new laptop is now a real friend because of this manual. My thanks to David Pogue and his staff. Carl FlachAlameda, CA
Rating: Summary: Absolutely the best Review: This book is worth its weight in gold. Pogue writes in a clear consise manner which is unusual for an author of computer books. He provides a bit of background material concerning the developement of Windows XP in the beginning, which I applaude, but nevertheless provides clear step by step procedures. He covers an incredible number of topics. Buy this book if only for a reference.
Rating: Summary: Gotta serve somebody.... Review: This book serves me well. I am not a computer expert but if you give me clear cut directions, I can follow them..... I can follow this book very easily. I am so happy I purchased it!!
Rating: Summary: Not for absolute beginners or techo-geeks Review: This is an excellent book. However, if Windows XP is the first Windows operating system you have ever used or you are looking for extremely detailed tricks that tweak arcane settings, this book isn't for you. There is a great deal of depth here, logically and clearly presented. Absolutely every aspect of XP is covered in great detail. However, it is book meant to be read, perhaps not in its entirety, although I'd recommend that, but at least on a chapter by chapter basis, relative to your needs. My only wish is the author stated his recommendations more forceably, regarding settings and alternative software that does a better job of the task at hand.
Rating: Summary: Review by an average computer user Review: This is one of the best computer books I have ever used. I know a little about computers but am not in the advanced group. This book explains everything you always wanted to know about an operating system. It is easy to read, gives some very tech discriptions but always tells it in plain english not computer-speak. I recommend this book for everyone from the very beginner on up.
Rating: Summary: Finally, a complete manual for windows XP Review: Unlike other XP books that focus only on the most technical or most basic aspects of Windows, this text does a great job of explaining all aspects of the new OS in some detail. Further, Pogue is a writer not a programmer trying to pretend he's a writer. The book is readable. Naturally I recommend other books in addition to this one, but this is definitely the best place to start if you want to understand Windows XP well before embarking on some major projects. Highly recommended.
