Summary: Kicks ...!
Review: You've read one C# book you've read 'em all. But which one do you want to start out with? I suggest Andrew Troelsen's book. The discussions are lucid, and full of rich examples. After you are done with this book, you'll find it so easy to read the other books on C# and the .NET platform. Get your money's worth with this book!

Summary: Great book - Refer to it all the time
Review: When I first got the book I didn't think too much of it. It did a good job explaining the concepts, was well written, and covered most of the topics I was interested in but nothing to get overly excited about. The real value of the book came when I found myself referening to it on a regular basis. It was very easy to look up a specific topic and get a quick example on its use. There always seemed to be some coverage of almost every topic I was interested in. I keep the book at home for use there, but have been searching for a similiar title for use at work. I am about to give up and just buy a second copy of this one.

Summary: Excellent starter
Review: A great first or second .Net book. It gives a great overview of many of the .Net technologies.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent Introduction to .NET
Review: I thought that this book was an an excellent overall introduction to programming in .NET. The first five chapters are outstanding and will get a programmer up to speed with .NET issues. I found the chapters on Windows Forms and GDI+ somewhat dry and a typical rehash of on-line documentation. Andrew Troelsen's COM knowledge is apparent in Chapter 12 which covers Interacting with Unmanaged Code. I thought this chapter was another excellent introduction to .NET programming issues.

Summary: THE BEST AS ALWAYS
Review: i have to admit that Mr.Andrew know how to write direct to your head, great examples and cover a lot of important subject, easy to understand :),it's for programmer who work with C or C++ or even VB.NET,Delphi or any OOP langauge,so it's great to buy it,even if it's cost me [money] i will buy it,because after reading it i will add another langauge to my collection :) and i will find a better job

Summary: Advanced C# concepts.
Review: A good reference book, but don't buy it if you aren't familiar with OOP.

Summary: Pretty Good
Review: I'm very happy with the content of this book. I come from a VB background and didn't have any difficulty following Andrew's examples. It is a very well written book that gets the concepts across using practical samples and without resorting to clever programming tricks that detract from the goal of teaching C# in the .Net era. I think I got my money's worth with this book. I've read many other .Net books (including Appleman's) from the VB perspective, but to my surprise, I found this book to be much more easier to read and follow.

Summary: A complete book on C#
Review: I have read several books on C# and .NET. This book helped me to absorb most of the C# and .NET . The book is based on a beta 2 version. Few examples in the book does not work on release version. The book covers .NET features, C# as a language, assembiies, windows functions and GDI and windows and web forms, very good coverage on Reflection and COM interoperability and ADO.NET and web services. I gave up the idea of buying charles petzold book on C#, to read windows and GDI functions, as this alone covers the most of it. This one book will be enough for both basics of C# and advanced features of C# in .NET . This will be a desktop companion for my future programming needs.

Summary: Good book but suffers from poor organisation.
Review: Let me say from the offset that this book is not for beginners and is indeed classified on the back cover as being intermediate to advanced level. What it doesn't tell you on the back cover is this book is written very much from a C++ programmer's perspective. If you are coming from a Visual Basic or Java background you may well get frustrated with the constant references to the C++ ways of doing things.

The organization of the book is poor in many ways. For starters there are too many forward references. Too many times will you see snippets of code with elements that aren't explained until further down the line. This seems to be a common flaw with programming books. Then, too many times I got to the end of a topic to be given a simplified overview when I really should have got it at the beginning. The author also tends to tackle topics during the learning process that would have been better relegated to appendices or at least to the latter chapters. Digressions are not welcome when you're in a hurry to consume such an immense new technology.

To be fair the book moves at a swift pace so you never have to dwell for too long on any given subject. The author provides a modicum of humor both in his prose and in his code which helps to oil the wheels of learning. Errata are frequent throughout the book but nothing too serious. The code examples are numerous and well developed throughout the text and you really do feel that you've learned something when you finish a chapter.

I can see how this book has gotten good reviews. I'm sure the C++ brigade love it and being one of the first books on C# to hit the shelves I have to admire the amount of effort it must have taken. However I'm sure that by this stage there are better organized books on the subject with different ones suited to people coming from different backgrounds. In short, you won't go wrong by buying this book but you may well find something more suited to your background and learning preferences.

Summary: A bit deprecated. Needs to be rev'ed up.
Review: I tend to agree with other reviewers. This book is great. Or should I say "was" great. I bought it with a sticker that hides the beta 2 compatibility and says instead: "Updates for final release available NOW online!" Thanks, better than nothing, but not enough. I use this book as a desktop companion while programming with .NET and when I am looking for something, I need to:
1) look at the book and the deprecated examples.
2) go online and correct the example with the new API.
This is not once in a while. All the Windows form examples need an update. System.timer won't work at all, etc... Pretty irritating. When the 2nd edition comes out, I'll be more than happy to get it and review it accordingly. In the mean time, you should be aware of this if you plan on buying this book.
