Summary: Simply put, the best OS book I have ever read. 6 stars!
Review: A MUST for anyone into UNIX. Covers most of the topics I have found needing info for in the last couple of years, and then some. Not only is it a very, very, very well written book, it is also a joy to read. There are times it becomes even funny. It must be a joy to work with these guys (and gal).

A final note: If only it covered more flavours of the beast. UNIX that is :) When I was at a loss nevertheless, I e-mailed the authors seeking for advice. To my surprise, they bothered to reply, promptly and ever graciously.

Steal, beg or borrow, but do get this book.

Summary: Most Comprehensive Single Source Reference for UNIX SA's.
Review: This book has clearly become the UNIX SA's Bible. Written in easy to understand terminology but still able to cover almost all System Administration tasks with a good deal of detail. This book also bridges the BSD <--> System V gaps by providing examples for both flavors. A good reference for SUN, HP, and SGI Administrators

Summary: Unixadministration beginners this book is for ya!!!
Review: Well, when i started my unix administration and networking studies i,ve got two books "Unix for programmers and users" and "Unix system administration handbook". First time i opened this book i was scared! Wow! 'It's too heavy for me, better i start with "Unix for programmers ..." Wrong! Learning thousends of commands and shell scripting without understanding how the unix systems works is completly useless! "Unix system administration" handbook gives you almost everything you need to build your own unix administartion baseground! It seems to be hard at the beginning but it's worth your pain! It was much easer for me to keep understading scripting and commands when i read this book! And now working on meny different kinds of unix OS and networks i am still comming back to the source. Why almost, beacause i was missing some deeper chapters about nis or nis+ and tcp/ip networking (i mean routing, subneting adn so on...), but anyway i've got my roots grounded and i keep growing! And now i know what i am looking for!

Summary: Extremely comprehensive--A MUST buy!
Review: This book constantly amazes me--EVERY time I've had a question about UNIX administration, the answer has been in this book! It is exceptionally well written, accurate, and immensely useful. I have this book sitting alongside Aeleen Frisch's book in my bookshelf, but honestly have to admit that the spine of Aeleen's book has barely been broken, while you can tell that this book has been heavily used. That's not to say that Aeleen's book is bad, but just that Evi's book makes every other UNIX reference pale in comparison!

Summary: Lacks details on NIS, NFS and other topics!!!
Review: Not bad for intro on unix sysadmin but not much meat on things like NIS, NFS disk arrays/RAID and web servers which are important nowadays. Also little on Unix server administration!!!!!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The best UNIX overview for system administrators ever!
Review: If you want to know how does the UNIX work - this is the book of choice. It covers all major aspects of UNIX operation and the administrator's involvement in it :-). The books coveres all major UNIX flavours (except Linux) and will be your book of choice in almost any environment. Be careful - the book is not "learn it in 24hours" - it requires some knowledge and experience, so if you are newbie - this will not be your book. Otherwise the book will bring you joy and enlightment, the humor is refreshing. Also I agree with most of the authors' opinions expressed there. Unfortunately the vendors are changing their products faster then the authors can cope but that's what the manuals are used (and paid) for. As a conclusion - for average to top level UNIX administrators I haven't seen a better book ever.

Summary: This book is a bargain!!!
Review: If you think that this book is too expensive, don't. Until this book gets you out of a job-on-the-line bind, you understandably might think it a bit pricey. It's actually a bargain. No other UNIX admin book on the market offers as much for UNIX administrators in one publication. What would you pay someone that saved your butt at work with some lifesaving information? the price is nothing! So stop whining! WARNING: this book does not geared towards people running Linux (so get Linux Unleashed).

Summary: Wait for the updated release.
Review: Don't get me wrong; I love this book. It's saved my life [well, okay, my job -- I have no life] on a number of occasions. But I talked to Evi Nemeth at LISA '98, and she told me there was going to be a new version coming out soon. When's soon? Beats me. But if you're hesitating about parting with $65 of your hard-earned cash [cheapskate], hold out for the rerelease.
