Rating: Summary: A must for the Sys Admin Review: A very very thorough reference volume essential to anyone responsible for setting up or administering a Samba server (or farm). A must definite must read. It provides very clear explanations that allow you to determine how to setup things in your own environment. The troubleshooting information is a life saver.
Rating: Summary: Sadly disappointed Review: Anxious to set up samba at home I headed down to the local bookstore and picked up this book at full price (perhaps the only samba 3 book there). I think I read about 1/4 of the book and have now decided it will be going back tomorrow. It's easy to read if you have some Windows and some Linux/UNIX experience, but every chapter is plagued with sentences an 8th grade student failing English could have pointed to problems! Sometimes it was difficult to determine what the meaning of some statements should be. In one chapter a discussion of non-encrypted passwords repeated advantages from the discussion of encrypted passwords, advantages that clearly do not exist!
It feels likes the HOWTOs from the Internet were simply copied, so why wasn't there time to edit?
Rating: Summary: You need the book if you're doing Samba Review: For a number of reasons: First, it's very good. It provides what you need to properly implement Samba in a variety of situations. It also provides the complete set of entries for smb.conf, something very very difficult to determine from looking at a man page. Second, to support Samba. The 3.x version allows for the full replacement of NT Domains with a linux (open source)-based solution. It provides an excellent alternative to Microsoft.
Rating: Summary: Pretty Good Book Review: Good book if you have never configured samba before. Contains some additions to the HTML users guide at the samba website but not enough to justify buying it if you have a fast internet connection and are familiar with Samba.

Rating: Summary: Official Samba-3 saved my day! Review: I have already used the content of this book in many consulting jobs and have found it very useful. The content is geared to helping a Microsoft centric sysadmin with not only Microsoft concepts but with providing an alternative to using windows for file and print services. If your customers are like mine they want a choice. I highly recommend this book. A must read.
Rating: Summary: Great Resource for Samba Administrator Review: I'm the middle of making a MacOS X network interoperate with a Samba network and I am finding this book invaluable. So far every problem I have encountered has been covered here. I expect that most, if not all, of the rest will be as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is doing more than the basics, to those who need to really dig in and find out how to exploit Samba-3 to its fullest. ............ kris
Rating: Summary: An excellent book for those keen on SAMBA Review: Samba is fairly simple at its basic configuration. When things start getting large and complex is when this book really shines. The authors give examples and scenarios of small simple configs and works their way up to very complex configs. Consider who the authors are and you can only expect the best.

Rating: Summary: A printed version of the great online doc. Review: The book is great, it gives you all background, detailed description, step by step guides etc. All you need to know about samba is there. However you should keep in mind that this is pretty much a printed version of http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/ , so the same content is available for free on the web site. I personally like old school paper books, that's the only reason I bought it. If you don't care, maybe you should check out the site first and it might be all you need.
